Really unsure whether to get the flu jab... Im 10 weeks pregnant xx has everyone pregnant out there gotten it? Ive just never had flu in my life so didnt really occur to me to get the jab... But now with this Australian flu scare thing, Im being scared into it! Im i just being silly not getting it?

Im not an anti vaxxer at all my daughter just had the MMR jab. Just not sure about the flu jab, so many strains and variations anyway.

Do it. The (many) benefits heavily outweigh the (very few) risks/side effects.

Flu is awful enough when your not pregnant, but so much worse when you are! Don't risk it, it really is worth it. You are in the high risk group now, don't ignore that.

I did both pregnancies and still do every year.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 02/01/2018 23:36

Get it get it get it.

I've had flu while pregnant, and it was fucking awful. I was very ill for 3 weeks and ended up with a secondary chest infection that needed two lots of antibiotics to clear it. Not ideal at all.

Flu can cause serious complications in pregnancy, it's why the jab is offered to pregnant women.

Lifeofpies · 02/01/2018 23:37

I have had it. A new vaccine is created each year based on what has happened in Australia/SE Asia, I believe (flu season before ours, though the virus has mutated so may not protect against this current awful strain).
Def worth getting—even if you’ve not had it before, your immune system is slightly impaired during pregnancy.

Bobbiepin · 02/01/2018 23:38

The question (as with any vaccjnation) is could you forgive yourself if you caught flu and it had a damaging effect on your baby and you knew you could have prevented it? Also considering you have another child, you certainly don't need flu now as you'll really struggle to look after your eldest DC. You'rr high risk and have the power to do something about it.

TheVanguardSix · 02/01/2018 23:38

It's got a long history of being used in pregnancy. It's totally safe.

juneisthemonth · 02/01/2018 23:51

I got it, I've also never had flu. I have a bad cold at the moment which is making my life a misery. God forbid what I would have felt like with flu. Just remember what you CANT take medication wise..... which feels like everything lol.
The benefits are too good, plus I had an achy arm after but that's it.

I would also like to say I never get ill, I am 16 weeks and have had tonsillitis, a horrific cold and a sick bug. Remember your immune system is not as good when your pregnant.

Beakyplinders · 03/01/2018 07:43

Have it!

I've had flu once in my life and it was horrendous, absolutrly horiffic which is why I'm a bit Hmm at people who say they have flu when actually they have a bad cold. There is no way I would want that on top of being pregnant when you're extremely limited in terms of meds you can take.

McTootBlowsOnHisBagpipe · 03/01/2018 08:08

I only had flu once as a teen and I couldn't move, it was awful. I had the flu jab at 18 weeks pg, no ill effects from it. I say get it done, it's over in seconds.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 03/01/2018 08:10

10 weeks here and had it last week.

cindersrella · 03/01/2018 08:14

I had mine with both of my girls. It didn't harm them or me.

You have to outweigh the pros and cons....

Worst case flu can make you really poorly or can kill you...

It's personal choice but I would have mine again if I was pregnant Smile

The flu vaccine doesn't protect you against all strains of flu, just the 3 or 4 strains that are predicted to be most common this year. Out of 100 vaccinated people in a normal year, 40-60% still catch flu. Aussie flu is a new mutation so the current vaccine isn't very successful in preventing people catching it (the news said it was only 20% effective). Even if you have the jab you still need to be careful, wash hands regularly and avoid sick people, etc.
