SPD help

Just looking for some thoughts from people who have suffered SPD. This is my third pregnancy, never had any issues previously. The last few days i'm really struggling with pelvic & lower back pain, it's making life difficult!

I have a MW appt at the weekend so will bring it up (trying to get a GP appt here is like pulling teeth) but just wondered what others found helpful to relieve the pain a little.

Not staying in one position for too long, keep legs together when getting in and out of car, not walking too much, pillow between legs in bed.

Codeine.
Support belt.
Steps two at a time, bring feet together on each step, does that make sense?
Careful in the bath, it relaxes everything and can make it easier to strain.
Rest.
Use ice or tens.

Thank you both. Wow i'm guessing there are specific belts or can I just find a pelvic support? Need to find my TENS too!

I have three different pelvic support belts, all recommended by friends. I'll try and find the one I wear each day.

Thank you that would be super

The nexcare and the serola are really good.

The one I like I can't find anywhere, but it's essentially a band that goes all the way around and then two smaller bands that wrap around the front. I also wear two belts at a time, and sometimes use a mans leather belt. Slightly lower down, over that bulge on your thigh, s it feels really low down, but helps. Leaves huge welts though, but got me through a couple days.

I use the belts all day, and went through a period of using tube grip overnight.
I use ice each afternoon and in the evening.

I sit in the shower. Just a fold out chair and a bigger mat, nothin fancy.

I take pain relief, as it's unbearable without.

Currently I have had sixty mg of codeine, have the tens on my lower back and ice on my public bone.

I use a nine ft body pillow to sleep.

How many weeks are you?

mustbemad17 · 02/01/2018 18:45

Only 18 😱 I didn't even think you could get it this early (still hoping i'm being a fanny tbh!). I think because i've had lower back issues prior to pregnancy i'm setting myself up.

I can't take codeine anymore, ended up in a semi-comotose state last time i took it so avoiding it. Will find the TENS & get some ice tho!!

Thank you for your help! Need another pillow now too

Hi, where I am you can self refer to a NHS physio and they see you pretty quickly. Worth a call to your MW to find out. From there I was accessed, given exercises and recommended the best belt for me. 33wks now, had it from about 15wks - stayed constant so far thankfully, rather than getting worse.

I got SPD at around 18 weeks too OP, not nice! I second the PP that said about getting out of the car with your legs together, pillow in between legs but put it horizontally so when you turn over it's still there iyswim?

You can also self refer at my trust, give your midwife a text/call and ask how - it's usually just a call to the physio department and you'll probably be invited to an initial group session to give advice, assess your needs and the one I went to gave out crutches and tubigrip things which I found helped a little. If your SPD is considered to be really effecting you, you may then be offered one-to-one appointments with a physio which are massively helpful!

Hello, sorry you're in pain OP, I remember this well. I found the referral from the midwife meant I was provided with a support belt, which I used every day. She also gave me some hydrotherapy exercises to do and I did these religiously three times a week plus gentle swimming at my local pool. I honestly think these exercises plus twice a week with a chiropractor who specialised in pregnant women saved my sanity and kept me mobile. SPD is a shit, especially if you have older dc to look after. All of the above, which was a lot of effort, meant I could still play with my ds and participate in family life. Prior to that I felt constantly in pain and miserable. Wish you all the best!

Thanks all, glad i'm not going mad! Will give my MW a buzz today & see what she says. It's a good job we love these babies!!
