So I ended up being sick for the majority of December. SSP which will f us up for the next month but can't be helped.
Ended up being admitted to hospital twice during December as I was so dehydrated and couldn't keep anything down.
Back to work today and I'm being way more sick than I have been at home for the past 2 weeks.
For the past week or so at home I was just bringing up bile in the morning and maybe once or twice later in the day.
Not at work. Had a few sips of hot chocolate and TMI but promptly vomited it and some more violently and quite projectile (through the nose too). I feel awful and exhausted. Don't really feel I should take any more time off sick unless it gets worse again.
WWYD?

Should have mentioned somewhere, I'm about 9 weeks

That sounds exhausting. I assume you get no work ick pay?
What did work say?
Are there any options for work from home?
What kind of role do you have?

Bryonie2017 · 02/01/2018 12:05

first things first - are you on medication for your sickness? It sounds like you should be!

I had an absolutely appalling pregnancy myself so I have some idea what you're going through so I'm just going to tell you what I did and then leave it up to you.

First I tried to ride it out, then I started taking odd days off, then I got some anti sickness medication (cant remember what now, little white pills twice a day) and that plus eating constantly kept me at work until I ended up taking a full month off for a different pregnancy complication.

The way I looked at it was pregnancy prepared me for being a mum, putting baby first meant putting me first, sod what was inconvenient for work and my colleagues, my baby was more important!

So, don't think about anybody else but yourself - what works best for you? if you can't physically be at work then dont be at work! spend the next few weeks/months doing as little as possible.

If you cant afford to not work, or think having to survive on SSP for god knows how long will cause more stress than the sickness then TALK to your work, they have to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate your pregnancy for example more breaks, permission to eat at your desk, changed work hours etc. (you can talk to the doctor about what they suggest)

It doesn't last forever (you'll have a baby eventually if nothing else) but it might last a while so do whatever it takes to survive it and DO NOT THINK ABOUT ANYONE ELSE BUT YOURSELF. You are growing a human - that shit is hard!

Unable to work from home, work in an office for distribution. Only me and boss in the office, two others in warehouse.
No work sick pay, as far as I can tell, though the handbook is confusing.

I'll copy & paste the sickness bit as someone else may be able to shed more light:

In terms of Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) most employees who pay National insurance (NI)
contributions are entitled to SSP which is payable for the first 28 weeks of sickness. While you
are receiving SSP your total gross salary will remain at its normal level (subject to your
eligibility to company sick pay outlined below) and will include your SSP entitlement. Details
of the current amounts of SSP applicable to you can be obtained from the DSS or your Finance
Department. The days (qualifying days) on which you qualify for SSP are the days on which you
normally work as explained in your contract of employment. These days also apply for sickness
whilst on holiday. SSP becomes payable if your sickness lasts for a period of five or more
consecutive days (which may include days on which you do not normally work). SSP does not
accrue for the first three days of absence through sickness. (SSP will continue up to 28 weeks of
absence due to sickness, SSP currently pays £79.15 per week).
National Insurance Sickness benefit - If you are not eligible for SSP or after the SSP are
exhausted the company will presume that the minimum National Insurance benefit will be
claimed by you and will deduct that amount from salary payments during the payment period.
Full details will be provided to you in this instance.
Sick Pay
Company Sick Pay starts after probationary period of employment is spent, and is paid to
employees during the first four days in any twelve month period. Payment calculations are based
on your basic salary.
Should the absence continue after the four days only on the discretion of the Managing Director
would any such payments continue.
Company Sick Pay is only paid to employees who comply with the Absence from Work Policy
which includes following procedure authorisation by management of the Company Self-
Certification Form and any Medical Certificates that are accurately completed by the employee.

Blimey no wonder you're confused. That's the worst sickness policy I've ever read. It starts by saying that you will continue to receive your normal pay and ends by saying it's at MDs discretion. I'd actually ask for clarification from HR. Have you passed your probationary period? If so it sounds like, MDs permission being granted would mean you would be on full pay....

Massive caveat that it's just my understanding of the policy.

RockingLobstering · 02/01/2018 12:30

Passed probation a few months back.
HR said before we broke up for Christmas that I'll basically have a month unpaid. (Well Stat sick pay but nothing else)
Its not very well worded is it?
Leaves loopholes open... Just don't want to miss out on any pay I may be entitled to!

It sounds like you've got hyperemesis gravidarum. Please join the hyperemesis support thread as we are all in the same boat!
Seriously, what medication are you on? If you've been admitted twice, I should think you must've been prescribed medication. The most effective medication is almost certainly ondansetron- you will get your life back with this medication.
Unfortunately many HCPs are reluctant to prescribe anything during pregnancy. Please familiarise yourself with the following guidelines:

Please give these guys a call, they are fantastic at giving advice specific to your problem:

Metoclopramide, Thiamine, Cyclizine, Nitrofurantoin. Some for a UTI, some for antisickness. Prochlorazine in stock fpr when I run out of the others.

OP posts:
Natsku · 02/01/2018 12:59

Go back to your GP and ask for Onandsetron as you are clearly not coping on your current meds so you need to go onto the next line of medication. Combining onandsetron and metoclopramide seems to be work well for some.

thingymaboob · 02/01/2018 13:00

It seems to me that the anti sickness tablets are not working effectively for you so you need to go back and you need to push for ondansetron. It's second line drug but it's reasonable for you to have it if the others aren't working.

RockingLobstering · 02/01/2018 13:00

Does onandsetron contain penicillin? I have an allergy Sad

OP posts:
thingymaboob · 02/01/2018 13:01

Agree with @Natsku - there are lots of combinations that work. I was on cyclizine and ondansetron and that worked well.

thingymaboob · 02/01/2018 13:02

@RockingLobstering no, ondansetron is not an antibiotic, it's an anti emetic. It does not contain antibiotics.

RockingLobstering · 02/01/2018 13:07

Thanks guys- think I will push for that next if this continues.
Feeling a bit over emotional atm as all I want to do is sleep and puke from the comfort of my own bed- not sit in front of a screen hoping whatever I drink will give me enough warning to dash to the bathroom when it comes back up.
But had so much time off in December I think if I called in sick again work wouldn't be impressed at all.

Cherrycokewinning · 02/01/2018 13:09

You poor thing. I really feel for you

RockingLobstering · 02/01/2018 16:42

What would all you lovely lot do? Obviously going to try and get more anti sickness meds when possible, but in the meantime would you go into work knowing full well you'll be vomiting throughout the day and feeling run down asf?

OP posts:
thingymaboob · 02/01/2018 17:33

@RockingLobstering I had approximately 6 weeks off in total but I should have had more. I did not get a medal for going in and my health suffered. I annoyed my entire team and looked absolutely dreadful. I should have taken about 3 months off. I was sick 5-10 times a day and found it very difficult to function. I would recommend you stay off until you're able to work without being excessively sick.

Paperchains1986 · 02/01/2018 18:45

Speak to citizens advice or a trade union, if you have one. Get the low down on the policy. SSP may affect your maternity pay, depending if you are off in the qualifying period

bloodynoris · 02/01/2018 19:00

It sounds like you get paid sick pay for the first 4 days then ssp after that. I work for a company previously who had a policy like this and i only had to go back to work for 1 day and then sick pay would start again for the the first 5 days. Best of checking with your HR or your manager should know. Hope it doesn't last too much longer for you.

Alpinebetony9911 · 02/01/2018 20:50

Are you taking both cyclizine and metoclopromide?
I don't work in antenatal care but have lots of experience with treating nausea and vomiting and when you take both of these together they essentially cancel eachother out and are therefore as good as taking nothing.

RockingLobstering · 03/01/2018 08:59

@Alpinebetony9911
Yup both, though I have 1 pill of each left. Both were recommended and prescribed by docs. :/
Back in work again today, though I feel awful. On the verge of tears tbh.
I had morning sickness the whole way through with my DD but it wasn't as crippling as this, this makes me feel so exhausted. Considering calling it a day and going home already.
