Recently found out I'm expecting. This is baby #1.

According to NHS Wales you can book an appointment with a midwife by calling the midwife led unit. According to the very grumpy and unhelpful matronly lady who just answered the phone that's not the case.

On this page: www.cardiffandvaleuhb.wales.nhs.uk/community-maternity-services-to-birth

It says: "All women are encouraged to make contact with their midwife as early as possible in their pregnancy. A midwife can be contacted via the Midwifery Led Birth Unit or the local GP Surgery."

But apparently that's not true.

I have to go to my GPs and fill in some lengthy booking form. They'll get in touch at some unspecified date.

I have Asperger's and bipolar disorder and am currently med free (as per last shrink's instructions if I get pregnant). But I do need to be referred to the perinatal psychiatry team - which apparently only the midwife can do.

Because of this my GP surgery suggests I see a GP - but to do that i have to play phone roulette or queue in the cold for an hour before surgery opens tomorrow in the hope of getting an appointment.

I'm really frustrated. I'm following all the online instructions - which seem to be massively wrong/ out of date.

Also, no one can give me any guidance as to when I'd get an initial appointment.

In Wales as well but come under Aneurin Bevan HB and coincidentally work in the health board so have an idea how the system works.
I'm now 6+5, went to doctor (had to wait for 2 hours in surgery!) as first port of call about 2 weeks ago as I have thyroid issues and knew the meds I was taking were dangerous in pregnancy and wanted to see midwife asap. I was referred there and then and the midwife rang within 2 days and referred me for consultant led care. I have already had a consultant on the phone re: meds and all seems to be tanking ahead! I hope this gives you a bit of confidence.
I know it's a frustrating wait to see GP but just how it seems to be.
Would your shrink be able to contact local midwifery unit on your behalf?
Congrats and good luck x

I’m under the same health board as the above poster and wth each of my 3 pregnancies I just rang my GP surgery and asked to make a midwife appt. they then arranged any referrals etc.

It seems Cardiff is a bit weird. We have to fill in a booking appointment request form first - the midwife will then be in touch. I emailed the lady responsible for the info on the website and she agreed it was misleading and was very apologetic. So at least that's one up, they're going to make the first appointment booking procedure clearer :)
