Estimated weight at scans

Hi everyone,

We had a scan at 34 weeks and she said the baby weighed 6lb13oz give or take. We have another scan on the 4th. I’m just wondering how accurate the estimate is.

Thanks

Well I had a scan 2 weeks before my due date as baby was suspected breech. They said 7.5lb roughly. He was well over 9lb Grin

Appleandcinnamon · 01/01/2018 13:34

Oh and was on time

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 01/01/2018 13:35

I'm my experience not accurate at all. I was told my son was very small they said he would be lass than 4lb. He was born 2 days later a very healthy 6lb 4 Confused

Evelynismyformerspyname · 01/01/2018 13:36

I was told dc2 would be about 11lb and he was 8lb 6

My friend just had a baby, she was told through the last few months of pregnancy that she was on the 98th percentile. She was cacking it as bit as her first baby was on the 2nd! Anyway baby arrived two days before her due date and was 7lb6oz. I don’t know what that percentile is but it’s definitely nowhere near the 98th!

Evelynismyformerspyname · 01/01/2018 13:50

Mind you with dc1 I was sent for a growth scan and just told she was above average size but that they'd only induce early if she was likely to be 11lb plus, and that she probably wasn't... That was frustrating at the time but probably far more sensible than giving a specific estimate. At that time I was told that third trimester estimates of size and weight are only very general ideas of whether the foetus is growing/ is unusually small or unusually large, and lb and oz estimates can be out by several lb in 3rd trimester.

ew1990 · 01/01/2018 13:52

My growth scan at 38 weeks was estimated 6lb4, had DD at 38+6 and was 6lb7

fruitofthenight · 01/01/2018 13:53

39 weeks estimated 5lbs, born 2 days later weighing 8lb

Saz1995 · 01/01/2018 13:55

I was told I would roughly be about 10ibs, delivered my baby boy ay 41+4 weeks at 7ib14 oz

bonzo77 · 01/01/2018 13:56

Can be around 20% out either way. Not reliable. Scans though are useful for checking other markers of fetal health, including placental function, kidney function and fluid level. Baby’s position is also a bigger factor regarding ease of delivery that size alone.

TammySwansonTwo · 01/01/2018 13:57

Not at all reliable - my twins were smaller when they were born at 35 weeks than they were estimated at 32 weeks.

Bobbiepin · 01/01/2018 13:59

Not really reliable but best estimate they've got really. Had a scan at 38+1 estimating 8lbs 4oz, had DD at 39+5 at 7lbs 12oz. Granted not that far off but not accurate either considering babies are meant to put on half a pound a week in the last 6 weeks or so.

Evelynismyformerspyname · 01/01/2018 14:02

Where I live now a 30 week scan is one of the 3 basic "essential" ones everyone gets, but it's primarily a scan of the placenta. Apparently placental failure is one of the biggest or the biggest risk to the foetus in the 3rd trimester, and of course a manageable one because if the placenta isn't functioning properly it can then be very closely monitored and early delivery can be considered.

eurochick · 01/01/2018 14:04

It depends on the skill of the scanner. We had several scans with the head of foetal medicine at a large teaching hospital. He was 30g out (and very pleased with himself when we saw him around the hospital after the baby was born). But I know many late scans are a long way out.

NooNooHead · 01/01/2018 15:03

Well, I wished they had scanned me later on in my first pregnancy. They might have figured that DD was huge... I had a doctor say she would ‘probably be about 7-8lb’.

She came out at 11lb 5.5oz! Shock

Bobbiepin · 01/01/2018 18:01

@noonoohead bloody hell! Natural or c section?

YouCantArgueWithStupid · 01/01/2018 18:03

We were told I'd have a monster baby...she was 6lb 4oz

YouCantArgueWithStupid · 01/01/2018 18:04

@NooNooHead shitting hell! No matter how you gave birth you deserve a medal! 🥇

Oysterbabe · 01/01/2018 18:12

They were about 1lb out with DS.

MagicFajita · 01/01/2018 18:15

The estimate was 8lb 3 oz and he was born just under 7lb.

blueberrymints · 01/01/2018 18:52

Christ @NooNooHead!!! You poor thing!! I had a 9 pounder and tore from my v through to my a!!

Don't worry about measurements op, they were off by 2 pounds with mine. I've heard that if you have higher levels of amniotic fluid it can really throw off the weight prediction.

NooNooHead · 01/01/2018 20:18

Ha ha! Thanks all! I was induced very unsuccessfully in every possible way, had a drip and epidural then 9 hours of labour before my DD went into distress and the consultant said I needed an emergency c-section. I’ve never seen so many medical professionals rush into one room all at once! Ha ha!

I’m hoping and praying to God that this current pregnancy isn’t going to end the same way... my current consultant looked incredulous at me when I told him my DD’s birth weight and said there was no way i’d Have given birth naturally.Shock (no shit...!)

I remember vividly how all the midwives came and put their heads round my curtain on the post natal ward after - none of them could believe a petite 5’2” woman could have such a huge baby! Grin
