Baby's heartbeat high - is it a girl - or is this just old wives tale??!!

At my last two a/n appointments my baby's heartbeat has been quite high - 158, then 150.

A friend who is due in a couple of weeks told me that hers was also high and that it is medically proven to mean it's a girl, as boys' heartbeats are slightly slower!!

Any truth in this???

I have another a/n appointment in 1 hour so we'll see what the reading is then

Old wives' tale - ds' hearbeat was usually around 150...

lemonaid · 24/04/2007 12:42

Old wives' tale.

I've even seen some proper research on this where they proved there was no correlation, but can't find the link at the moment.

It's a surprisingly popular belief, though.

belgo · 24/04/2007 12:43

It's not medically proven that heart rate relates to the sex. But my midwives seemed to believe in it, and my dds both had high heart rates.

Taylormama · 24/04/2007 12:44

not true = baby's heartbeat fluctuates all the time depending on whether they are sleeping or whirling around etc

lulumama · 24/04/2007 12:44

none of this old wives tales are medically proven, AFAIK....

they are good fun, a scan gives a better indication !

lemonaid · 24/04/2007 12:45

Ah, found it .

Babylovesmuffins · 24/04/2007 12:45

Oh that's good! (Well not that I don't want a girl IYSWIM??)

It's just I started out the pregnancy totally convinced I was having a boy and when I heard that story I thought it must be a girl, so it's nice to know that it's back to being a surprise again!!

my sil was told by a midwife about this, she said that based on the heartbeat, she was having a girl (sil was keen to know the sex of the baby but the legs were crossed at scan). it wasn't a girl, she had a boy.

saralou100 · 24/04/2007 12:51

i have a colleague who used to be a madwife that will guess the sex with the heartbeat.. she's been right every single time!! (witch!!)

but, i think she has a talent for it... we've tried guessing the sex based on heartbeats (usin the theory that girls are faster) and have been wrong a few times now!!!!

Babylovesmuffins · 24/04/2007 12:56

Thanks Lemonaid. That's a fab link! It's also interesting that the heartrate tends to decrease slightly from very early pg - which may explain why it was 158 at my 16 wk appointment and then 150 at 19 wks...

but then again I was probably just rushing around the first time and should stop reading into things too much!!!

Thanks ladies

I was told it's how the heartbeat sounds, not the speed. My mw told me I was expecting a boy as heartbeat sounded liek a steam train. Girls sound like galloping horses (apparently) SO I was convinced child no. 2 would be another boy - mw kep hearing the train sound. THen, while lying in the labour ward waiting to push, when mw did teh heartbeat I heard a galloping horse! Out popped dd!

Twinmummyx2 · 24/04/2007 12:58

It isn't medically proven- but it did work for me! All 8 of mine had the 'right' hearbeats..it does depend on if babies sleeping etc.....

My friends 2 boys had fast heartbeats all the time-so it didn;t work for her, they are boys always on the go-dunno if that had anything to do with it....but they can't sit still!

You will need a few readngs before you can get accurate readings...and even then i wouldn;t go out and buy pink or blue clothes!

xx

BabyMadwithBump · 24/04/2007 13:05

At my last MW app I asked my MW about this steam train, galloping horses thing, she said that our LO HB sounds like a train but she quickly add that all the babies that have sounded like a train lately have all come out girls, lol, so I don't know, I really would love to know my LO sex for a number of reasons but DH doesn't want to know, which I think is unfair seem as tho it started out that we both really wanted to know the sex!, but still, just have to wait and see!

PurpleLostPrincess · 24/04/2007 14:09

Well, I've always thought it was a co-incidence so it doesn't prove anything but interestingly, my DS's heartbeat whilst being monitored when having him was generally about 140ish. However, when I was being monitored while in labour with DD, her heartbeat was about the 160's. I remember saying to my exhusband about the myth about this and being totally convinced she was going to be a girl - and she was! As people have said though, I don't think there is any medical back up for this though...

Mrsjaffabiffa · 24/04/2007 14:10

The high low heartbeat thing, I'm not convinced on all 3 of mine have been different every appointment. This one 36+4 today started off at around 155bpm and is now down to 122bpm at last appointment. DS was always really high around the 150-160bpm mark. DD was up and down like a yo yo, so had no idea with her, it was different at every appointment steadily decreasing through out the pregnancy.

Using a hand held doppler though you can get the steam train sound or the horse hoof, depending on the position that you are listening in. I've certainly heard both.

Twiglett · 24/04/2007 14:12

DS's in utero heartbeat was around 160

DD's was 140

make of that what you will

NotanOtter · 24/04/2007 14:12

no truth to it checked all research and no evidence either way
i had a tachycardic(sp) baby boy!

pickledpear · 24/04/2007 14:13

i have had two girls and a boy and the heart rate worked for me on all three but just coincidence??? i am not so sure

FoghornLeghorn · 24/04/2007 14:13

I have 2 DD's - DD1's heart rate was really fast & DD2's was really slow. Completely led me down the wrong path !

coppertop · 24/04/2007 14:14

All 3 of mine had very similar heartbeats (around 140ish). I had 2 boys and a girl.

BettySpaghetti · 24/04/2007 14:17

According to my acupuncturist, whether you're having a boy or girl can also affect the mothers pulse rate.

She reckoned she had an almost 100% accuracy with her pregnant clients and was certainly right with me.

Babylovesmuffins · 24/04/2007 17:49

hmmmm...!!

Baby's heartrate was 156 today, so back up close to what it was the first time.

I have to say, I have always heard galloping horses!!

I love all these "old wives' tales" - it'll keep me guessing - the needle on the thread thing didn't really work!!

Obviously we don't really want to know the sex yet(otherwise I would found out at my scan 2 weeks ago ) but it's fun guessing in the meantime.
