When to buy bras?

I’m currently about 5 weeks pregnant and my boobs are already MASSIVE. I’ve gone up at least 3 cup sizes already and am having to cope with a couple of old bras from when I was heavier and a few stretchy sports bras. My problem is that I’m not sure if I should buy new bras now or wait to see what happens? In your experience does the growth plateau for a bit or do they get smaller at all after the initial early hormone rush? I’m a funny size at the best of times (small rib cage) so I don’t want to spend a fortune if i’ll grow out of them in a few weeks!

I had the same predicament, it was fairly quickly I stopped being able to wear my usual bras and just coped with a couple of bras which weren't wired. Some maternity bras are designed to grow with your boobs - I found it really hard to pick a bra as I've no idea what size I am now, and I know they'll only get bigger so I've bought some mumba bras which are supposed to be good all through pregnancy & for nursing too, they're so super comfy! Personally my boobs were so sore early on that i think it's worth being comfortable.

I grew out of my bras early on. Someone recommended Morrison’s, so I went down there and bought a few of there stretchy bras in xl and xxl for about £6 each and they’ve been fab.

I started getting uncomfortable at 6 weeks pregnant in my 28F bras and was refitted in Bravissimo as 30FF (so effectively up two cup sizes, was wearing them on tightest hook to start to allow for ribcage expansion further down the line). Bought 2 normal underwired bras in that size and they lasted until about 30 weeks when I was remeasured as a 30G but advised to go up to 32FF as ribcage was definitely on the way out by that point.
I just stayed in underwires as they were all well fitting but a cheaper option as suggested above and I would probably do in a future pregnancy is to go into a stretchy bra. I now have a Royce Blossom which I use for sleeping, it comes with multiple hooks on the band and in ranges of 3 cup sizes so caters better to small band / large cup than the stretchies which are S / M / L which tend to offer no support at all. If you do get a Blossom definitely band up a couple of sizes from your underbust measurement as they are super tight.
I am currently 29 under bust, 39 leaning measurement so wear 28H or 30GG in an everyday bra but the 32G-H is perfect in the Royce Blossom. 34E-FF probably would have been the ticket during my pregnancy though, starting on tightest hook and loosening as ribcage expanded.

I needed new bras by your point too. My ribs were very painful for a few weeks. I also went up about 4 or 5 cup sizes. But then my boobs stayed pretty static until right near the very end and I managed to survive until the end with bra extenders. Went up another 2 cup sizes when my milk came in. Shock

I'm nearly 16 weeks and I really need to go and get fitted soon, I've put it off this long but like you my boobs increased in size very quickly (although I don't think 3 cup sizes, woah! Grin ), and I find all my bras uncomfortable now and my boobs sometimes pop/fall out of them, eek. I've got HG though and only just starting to recover a bit so haven't been able to go the shops yet but maybe this week coming as I'm hoping to go back to work the week after and I need a few bras. I didn't want to go too early as we're skint and I'm worried about the cost but I don't really have any choice now. I'm hoping if I go to a good department store the fitters will be able to help me choose bras that will last for as long as possible throughout the pregnancy and be comfortable but I understand I may need to be fitted again and at the very least towards the end of the pregnancy for nursing bras. I didn't realise how costly pregnancy would be aside from all the baby stuff haha.

I'd get measured straight away. There nothing more comfy than a maternity bra for spree boobys!

cindersrella · 31/12/2017 11:49

Spree lol! I mean sore

katmarie · 31/12/2017 12:02

Get measured definitely, and be prepared to go again later on. Mine seemed to settle at about 32 weeks.

Most useful thing I bought was a pack of bra strap extenders, I got them from amazon in all different colours, and they gave me a few more weeks without having to buy new bras.

Currently 12 weeks and got fitted for new bra yesterday as already gone up a size, just wearing the maternity bra has made me 100 times more comfortable. No underwire so no pain around chest area and now back feels million times better 😊

katmarie · 31/12/2017 12:59

Oh yes, getting rid of the underwires was a definite improvement on things. I'm normally an E cup, and have gone up to a G, and didn't expect to find non wired bras that comfortable, but it's been such an improvement!
