What kind do you suggest?

The Chicco Next To Me/Tutti Bambini CoZee Bedside Crib types or the 'traditional' type.

I am interested in the former as they aren't as bulky and you can sleep next to your baby. However is this just an unnecessary expense?

Given the bedside cribs would only last 6 months you'd have to get a normal cot for baby anyway to not only sleep in but to keep in for 'safety' if you were on your own at home and needed to go to the loo for a few minutes? (That's what my mum says anyway lol.)

Unless you co-slept with them after 6 months?

Hope that made sense! Any advice please x

DD slept on me for 4 months, then in a hammock next to me/in bed with me until 9 months, then a vintage cot/in bed with me till 17 months, then in a full size single bed/in bed with me till about 3.

I wouldn’t buy anything expensive till you know what sort of baby you have.

JamdaniSari · 29/12/2017 21:14

Interesting :)

When you say next to you...I presume in bed with you...is that ok/safe?

What do you mean by hammock?

Thanks xx

We had the chicco next to me which was very good and lasted to 8 months as it is very roomy and my ds wasn't pulling himself up!

We also put him in a sleepyhead which fit perfectly into the next to me! When he was dinky!

TittyGolightly · 29/12/2017 21:18

Yes, in bed next to me. There are guidelines to ensure bedsharing is safe that you can look up.

In some parts of the world fabric is tied under and over a dining table and baby sleeps in that. This is a slightly more middle class version. Grin

I've got a Next to Me crib for nighttime which has been an absolute Godsend, particularly when DS has been poorly and wants to be close all the time! Downstairs we have a Moses Basket and a swinging seat, he often naps in the basket and I can pop him in there or the seat (fastened in with the seatbelt!) if I need to nip to the loo or answer the door etc.

You can pick up Next to Me cribs second hand on FB for fairly cheap and just buy a new mattress, doing this saved me around £80 I think.

We started with a Moses basket and when my daughter was 5 weeks old we got a chicco next to me and I wish we'd had it from the start! It made night feeding so much easier. Definitely worth the money. She's 10 weeks old now and loves it. She also has a cot bed in her room which she naps in sometimes and is ready for when she grows out of the next to me.

HopeAndJoy16 · 29/12/2017 21:29

We had a chicco sidecot for 5 months which I bought second hand (I bought a new mattress though). It barely got used as a co sleeper, it was a useful space for night time nappy changes, and dd mainly slept on or next to me in bed. When I finally convinced dd to sleep in it, it was with the sides up at the foot of the bed. We bought a cot at 5.5 months as she was pulling herself up at that point. Agree with pp to not splash out. I would have been really disappointed if I'd paid full price for the chicco.
Unicef have a useful guide for safe cosleeping: www.unicef.org.uk/babyfriendly/baby-friendly-resources/leaflets-and-posters/caring-for-your-baby-at-night/

We had a crib in our room and a cotbed in their room. Crib lasted til they were old enough to sleep alone. Cotbed is still in use with the sides off now at 3yo.

JamdaniSari · 29/12/2017 21:31

Never considered a swinging seat!
When will you be 'upgrading' to a cot?

I'm currently using a cozee crib with my 5 week old and love it. Used a Moses basket with DC1 and there's no comparison tbh.

Can be used as a travel cot too if you go away.

JamdaniSari · 29/12/2017 21:39

I was really interested in the Chicco but my seems to be really against it. She thinks they wouldn't last in them v long, they'd pull themselves up after a few months and they're not as safe as normal cots in terms of you can't put baby in there if you needed a few minutes.

I've got a Moses basket for downstairs, undecided about upstairs though!

Make sure to check your bed height because ours is too high for the next to me style cribs and we have to get a small cot to keep in our bedroom instead.

HandbagFan · 29/12/2017 22:23

For DS we had the Snuzpod next to my bed for 7m then moved him into his room in a cot bed. He’s still in it now at 22m old.

KCpip · 30/12/2017 00:37

We had a moses basket which DD wouldn’t sleep in. She mostly slept on us or in pram during the day. Then when she was about 4/5 weeks old we researched and bought Chico Next to Me. It was a life saver for us coz meant she could sleep right next to me and so easy for night time breastfeeding. Yes, it’s not exactly cheap but we then let a friend borrow it and now have it back for DD2 so feel we’re getting money’s worth out of it. Just bought new mattress to keep it fresh. And will hopefully sell it on at some point.

boredofmyoldname · 30/12/2017 00:45

You can use most cots with one side off.

Make sure it's at height or very slightly lower than the side of your bed and secure it to the frame using cable ties or have it wedged between your bed and the wall to make sure there is no movement or space for baby to fall into.

Best of both as it's only one purchase and you can add the side on later.

SomehowSomewhere1 · 30/12/2017 12:53

Not due till Feb, but I have a £99 version of the Chico from Toys R Us, looks exactly the same.

TinoTheArtisticMouse · 30/12/2017 13:12

We got a swinging crib for £10 from a baby sale, which we had in our room next to the bed for 6 months (with a new mattress), then a cotbed in her room from then on.

Newbiebaby1 · 30/12/2017 20:26

I’ve bought a Moses basket for downstairs and a Chico next to me crib for the first months, got this both secondhand for £100 total rather than what would have been £200-220. Will just buy the new mattresses for both. Figure I can then sell them on secondhand again.
I’ve also bought the nursery furniture with a cot bed while the offers are on.

user1478902502 · 30/12/2017 22:35

We used a Tutti Bambini Cozee which I loved but we moved her out of it at about 8 weeks because she kept rolling and face planting into the side of it that is quite solid. I was worried and waking through the night to check and move her so at that point she went into her cotbed (in our bedroom).

I did move the Cozee to the living room then but it hasn't had much use there because she only sleeps on me during the day!

I am still glad we bought it because it was easier to have her next to me when I was recovering from the birth in the first couple of months.

Nomad86 · 31/12/2017 10:20

You can rent a bedside crib from NCT which works out cheaper, unless you think you'll want it for another child in the future. I found it much easier to settle the baby after a feed, and you don't need to get out of bed! There were no problems transferring DS into a cot at six months either, which I worried about.

Lemontwist · 31/12/2017 10:29

I have a Brio bedside cot which is awesome and I don't know what I would do without it. I'm expecting DC3 now.
They are quite hard to get hold of (eBay etc) but there are a few similar makes I think.
It is a full cot size but with one side that moves completely up and over so the cot can be alongside the bed level with the matters. It is brilliant for almost co-sleeping without having baby actually in the bed with you.
