I'm 6 weeks pregnant can I take an antihistamine for morning sickness? I read online it helps? X

Most antihistamines can’t be taken in pregnancy. You could ask a pharmacist for advice.

TTCI · 29/12/2017 13:34

I can't I'm at work and I don't drive in just desperate for a cure x

@Nightmanagerfan
That's not true. Antihistamines are normally the first line treatment for nausea and sickness in pregnancy.
A wide body of evidence suggests that H1 receptor antagonist antihistamines have no human teratogenic potential (teratogenic means harmful defects in the foetus).
However, not all are effective at treating sickness.

@TTCI read this guide and make GP appointment to get cyclizine if you're struggling.

The NHS website says no to antihistamines for pregnancy. I also asked my midwife as I get hayfever and she said no to it as well x

There are groups of antihistamines which are effective and safe to take in pregnancy for morning sickness.

Unfortunately a lot of people are misinformed, including midwives.

Read this link, which are the RCOG guidelines which all obstetricians, GPs, midwives etc should follow:
www.rcog.org.uk/globalassets/documents/guidelines/green-top-guidelines/gtg69-hyperemesis.pdf

Here is a screen shot from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists green top recommendations for treatments for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy:

If you're really struggling with sickness OP, have a gander at the Hyperemesis Support thread, it's fully of knowledgeable ladies lie thingy who can give you some good advice re: medication. Cyclizine in particular is generally the first-line treatment for severe morning sickness.

mummyG2C · 29/12/2017 17:47

Hi yes I take one called promethazine which is actually a motion sickness tablet that works as antihistermine as well it has been used for a long long time as anti sickness, my husband is a doctor and he asked several colleagues incl an obstetrics registrar and they all said it's a good one and can be bought over the counter. I am currently 28 weeks still suffering with sickness and still taking them and me and baby are fine (have been taking them since 6 weeks).

Just a note though I take them at night before I go to bed they then make me feel normal for most of the next day and you don't get any drowsiness from them (actually help with sleeping especially at this stage when it's starting to get tricky!) just check the dosage as sometimes you take one or two depending on how strong each tablet is, hope that helps!

Natsku · 29/12/2017 17:54

Yes you can, it just has to be certain ones. Cyclizine and Promethazine are commonly used for pregnancy sickness, speak to your GP about a prescription but if you have to wait for an appointment and are desperate you can get Promethazine over the counter called Avomine but you need to tell the pharmacist that it is for travel sickness or they won't sell it to you. But definitely get to your GP as soon as you can, you don't have to suffer, and come over to the hyperemesis support thread for more advice.

Mummyh2016 · 29/12/2017 17:59

I was prescribed avomine when I was pregnant, it worked wonders.

TTCI · 29/12/2017 18:02

The thing is I'm not actually being sick I just have constant unrelenting nausea the minute I wake and the moment I go to sleep. It actually woke me up last night. I'm scared to eat anything most things make me want to be sick xx

OP posts:
Natsku · 29/12/2017 18:27

unfortunately not much works for the actual nausea, the antihistamines might help so it's worth trying but they also might not. Doxylamine is good for the nausea but a GP probably won't prescribe that because it has to be imported so it's a bit too costly really, which is a pity as it's fab.

Lifeofpies · 29/12/2017 20:01

The wondeful people on the HG thread told me about avomine - it’s the only thing that has reduced my vomiting and enabled me to keep some food and drink down. But as Natsku says, sadly it won’t get rid of nausea or the horrid taste in your mouth...

Jen41 · 30/12/2017 01:42

I have to take anti histamine every day for allergies - I’m 8 weeks, checked with my gp I could continue taking and (after checking on her system) she said yes. So cetirizine must be ok. Don’t know if they’re any use for nausea.

TTCI · 31/12/2017 19:55

Thanks for all your advice guys xx I took one also do you think I feel sick an (ive actually been sick last night) is because I'm constipated ? Xx

In exactly the same boat as you. I've been to boots (after a thorough Google and a study of the NICE guidelines) and got some Prochlorperazine tablets which dissolve under your top lip. Been nauseous for weeks and on top of anxiety and a bereavement, decided the benefit probably outweighs the risk at 12 weeks. Made me sleepy, but after a nap, the nausea and breathlessness have lifted enough for me to spend some time with DD and DH this evening. Had some spatone and extra water and a couple of snacks and feel almost human again for first time in weeks.

I know it's hard, but try to keep eating and your fluids up. I had ++ketones in urine this morning and felt horrible.

TTCI · 31/12/2017 21:53

@Mybabystolemysanity omg I'm so sorry to hear that you're bereaved sounds like you've had an absolutely shit few weeks sending you loads of love ❤️ yeah trying the antihistamines to try and get rid of it because I literally can't do anything it's awful hope you have a happier 2018 xx

Try travel sickness tablets Avomine. You can buy over the counter. Check with your doctor first. They helped me.

Foodylicious · 31/12/2017 22:00

I took Promethazine right through pg from about 12 weeks I think (I had spent the previous 6-7 weeks off work, feeling constantly sick and vommimg 5-8 times a day.
It worked really well and eating regularly (constantly) helped too.
Also nappy bags and baby wipes in the glove box for the occasional unexpected vom at the side of the road.

I have since read that you shouldn't take Promethazine in the last week's of pregnancy, so what ever you take, check with your hcp when it is safe to take etc.

Mybabystolemysanity · 31/12/2017 22:14

Thank you TTCI

Just come back to MN after a long time off because been in need of support and distraction. Is a wonderful forum.

I hope you manage to find something to relieve the nausea. It's really debilitating even if you're not actually vomiting much.

Brand name for the Prochlorperazine is Buccastem M. Had to say they weren't for me and I will check back with GP as soon as I can in week.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 31/12/2017 22:22

Some antihistamines are prescribed for pregnancy nausea. I have had success with cyclizine and promethazine.

Please go to gp to get them prescribed though.

Helgard · 17/12/2019 20:36

I have just started taking Zyrtec (cetrizine) and I actually feel normal after weeks of unrelenting nausea. Can't believe the change, I feel I've got my life back, and can actually relax instead of constantly worrying about the next rising tide of nausea and what am I going to eat to try and manage it. Fingers crossed they keep working. Does everyone take them at night, or better in the day?
