Gestational diabetes - when do they put you on medication?

I'm 30 weeks and I was diagnosed with GD just before Xmas and have been monitoring my blood sugar levels 4 x day. So far my results have been fine the majority of the time with the odd high reading. I have my appointment with the diabetic clinic on the 4th Jan. At what point to they feel I can't control my blood sugar levels with my diet and move me onto medication? It would be good to prepare myself so I don't get too upset at the appointment.

I just went in today, I had two high readings so they put me on metformin. It's very safe. I have been on the cusp of diabetes in the past though.

It will vary dependent on how well you can manage your levels through diet. I was GD in my 3rd pregnancy (guidelines changed between 1st and last child, I would also have been classed as GD in the first pregnancy). My body seems to have a total mind of its own and I was on insulin injections from fairly early on (was tested early due to previous history) but as soon as baby arrived it all stopped. I do have an annual fasting blood sugar test to keep a check on things just in case but it was all fine and once I got the hang of it, it was ok.

You'll be fine, and if you do need medication, don't worry about it, it's safe, and keeps you and baby healthy.

Thanks for your response! Sounds like I should prepare myself for the tablets. It's all new to me so getting my head round it all.
