Glucose Tolerence Test- too early?

Daisy91 · 28/12/2017 16:57

I’ve been booked in for a glucose tolerence test, I assume because my mother has type 1 diabetes.

I’ve just had a look at patient information document and it says they usually do it between 26 & 28 weeks? I’m only 13 weeks.

Do you think they’ve made a mistake? It’s tomorrow morning and I can’t get hold of the right department to confirm.

Just don’t want to take a morning off work to drive all the way to the hospital to be told they’ve made a mistake and it’s too early!

Anyone had a similar issue? Or have a family history of diabetes? When did they do the GTT?

Thanks in advance.

Some categories of people now need to have it done ASAP and then repeated at the normal time.

I had mine at 16 weeks as I had GD in my last pregnancy. Didn’t think they get done as early as 13 weeks but am not sure really.

Must admit I thought it was just if you’d previously had gestational diabetes that you had the early test but different areas may have different policies.

Thanks Viva. Maybe it’s because I’m high risk!

First time pregnancy. So maybe they are just very organised?

Not sure why you will get tested early despite family risk. I have a family history of diabetes but never got tested early in my first pregnancy. Perhaps different trust have different policies

I'm having mine at 24 weeks. Doing it because of BMI rather than family history tho.

Scrumptiousbears · 28/12/2017 17:21

I can't remember when I had them but I had two during my second Pregnancy.

My hospital test women with family history earlier, much to the nurses dismay as you have to go back for re-test later on as you've noted, if negative. If positive then you can start making changes straight away. I have glucose intolerance caught in second pregnancy and in third pregnancy they just put me straight onto diet and daily home monitoring from 6 weeks and I have had high readings at times so adapted diet/exercise to manage it. So no harm having it now, I am only 29 weeks now

HandbagFan · 28/12/2017 17:36

Where I live you now have it done ASAP after booking and again at 28 weeks.

I had one at around 16 weeks and one at 28 weeks. If they think there could be an issue they test early. Better to be safe than sorry

Are you sure it’s the GTT? My DM has diabetes so I had to do a fasted glucose test at 12 weeks. So just one blood draw after not eating for 12hours. Then later on - maybe around 24weeks I did the GTT test which is the 2 blood draws with the glucose drink and 2hr wait in between.

PipsM · 28/12/2017 22:31

I had it at about 11 weeks (right in the middle of morning sickness) due to my age (37!!!) and will have to do it again later on. There are certain factors that mean you have it earlier and then do it again later- fun!!
I had to fast for 12 hours then drink the drink and go to have bloods done 2 hours after drinking it.
Take a bottle of water and a snack for after- you'll be starving!!!

DuggeeHugs · 28/12/2017 23:14

Last time my consultant ordered GTTs at 13, 24 and 30 weeks so it can vary quite a bit. No history of diabetes but other concerns as pregnancy progressed.

Mummyme87 · 29/12/2017 08:12

Some units do a very early one to assess for type 2 diabetes.

underthewestway · 29/12/2017 08:49

My risk factor is that I’m 40 (no family history) and I’m doing it tomorrow at 17+5, then a repeat at 26-28 if all clear now. Was told that if you’re ‘high risk’ then the first test should be between 14-20. Must depend on location.

MissYeti · 30/12/2017 20:44

I had a glucose test at 7 weeks due to family history and a bmi of just over 30. No doubt I'll be made to do another one in the coming weeks as I hit 24 weeks on monday

happychange · 30/12/2017 20:49

You are meant to do a test early on jb your pregnancy to establish whether you have diabetes already , so it’s like a baseline test. If you don’t have it at 13 weeks but test positive at 28 weeks, that means you have GD.

TheMrs04 · 30/12/2017 20:58

I had my GTT at 16 weeks which came back clear then had another at 28 weeks which also came back clear! Both my pregnancies have been high risk! I'm sure they just have to be careful x
