Coping with ongoing bleeding at 12 weeks

Hi everyone
I have been spotting dark brown blood/discharge for four days now. Had my scan on Monday that showed baby is doing really well thank goodness. They said they could see an area of bleeding in my womb but seemed totally unconcerned.

I'm still getting the bleeding every time I visit the loo and although I'm trying to be rational and not panic, it is really getting me down. I keep worrying that even though it hasn't signified a problem in the past, what I'm getting today could be a problem, if that makes sense?

Has anyone got any tips for dealing with the anxiety after a good scan but with continuing spotting/bleeding? Thank you Flowers

Hi,

I had lots of bleeding 9-12 weeks. Really got me down too,

Cry on your other half's shoulder. Take heart in how much blood is in you vs how little is coming out. Go back to EPU every time you can't take it anymore for a scan. Xx

Thanks ClareB, its good to know I'm not the only one. Did they ever find out what caused yours?

It was a subchorionic bleed, basically a bruise in my uterus underneath the babies. They're not sure what caused it in the first place, but it's gradually being reabsorbed.

Lilychouchou · 20/12/2017 13:53

I think they saw something similar with me too Clare. Was yours red or brown?

I bled for 6 weeks with my first baby, from 9-15 weeks; she’s a healthy 3 year old handful now. They never conclusively said what caused it at the time but later I was told the placenta had started to detach itself and then re-embedded. I had a retained placenta after she was born and always wondered if the two were connected.

Not much advice to stop worrying; how can you not really! But for managing the anxiety I found doing as little as possible helped me feel like I was giving her the best chance of being okay. I was commuting 90 mins each way into London at the time and was off work for 4 weeks in total; should have taken all 6 but I tried to power on to start with and found it so stressful. So, if you’re not already, my advice is get signed off work. Any doctor will sign you off for ongoing bleeding, as much for your own sanity than anything else.

I bled from 5-20 weeks continuously during this pregnancy, varying from gushing blood to the point I couldn’t move from the toilet to brown discharge. It’s been put down to subchorionic haemorrhage. I’m now 4 weeks bleed free but very cautious I will start to bleed again. My haemorrhage was classed as a ‘gigantic’ (11x6x4) but baby was always happy and healthy on the scan and continues to be! My bleed has reduced to a 2x1x1 and is not causing any issues at present. Please see your midwife and see if they will refer you to a consultant to keep an eye.

ClareB83 · 20/12/2017 14:31

Gosh that is big @Steeley113! Mine was 8cm x 4cm x 4cm, but is now 4cm x 1cm which makes me feel like it might be gone completely soon.

OP I had bright red blood, lots, on two occasions and brown blood off and on around those two events.

I also had some brown blood just from an aggravated cervix. This has stopped recently as well, which is nice.

I'd quite like to keep my blood inside as much as I can!

Lilychouchou · 20/12/2017 22:34

Thanks ladies it's so nice to hear some positive stories. Congratulations to you all.

At my scan they didn't even measure the bleed so no idea how big/significant it is Confused

Hi Lily, I am 11 weeks today and been having this problem since...I don't know, 5-6 weeks. I also had a scan that showed a bleed and like you they didn't measure it or give me any real advice. It was private. It is horrible, isn't it? I am booked for a scan in the New year and I am going to ask them to measure it. I haven't booked in with a midwife yet, my first appt to book in is also in new year. I am really hoping I can persuade them to refer me to see a doc. Good luck with things, you are not alone going through this and I'll be thinking of you and others trying to stay sane with it!

itshappening · 21/12/2017 01:21

Ps I totally know what you mean about thinking each bit of bleeding might be of different significance to the bit before. I have had brown, red and sometimes pink and some clots too, both brown and red. At one point I had a speculum exam, this was before the haematoma was seen, and they said cervix appeared closed. Obviously some stuff still gets through though, I don't really understand.

Lilychouchou · 21/12/2017 07:10

Thanks for your lovely message itshappening, so sorry you're going through this stress too! I am going to try to get my midwife to refer me too. I'm sure the worrying isn't hurting the baby but we need to take care of our mental health too and at the minute I feel like I'm going mad!

I'm sorry it's happening to you but it's good to know we're not alone. Sending lots of love and hope it stops soon xxxx

My me deuce 'referred' me to EPU. Meant nothing. When I get there they sighed and sent me to A&E to get referred. Once they gave me a piece of paper EPU were happy to see me and once you've been seen there you can go back whenever you like.

I had absolutely shed loads of bleeding that started about 11 weeks. It was heavier than the heaviest period I've ever had for two days. Then they scanned and found a subchrionic haematoma. It was massive. 10 10 3 if i remember correctly. Kept bleeding for weeks afterwards. Although it slowed down. The haematoma was still there at my 20 week scan but much smaller.

DS2 was born, at home, at 39+5 happy, healthy and completely obviously about all the stress!

I know it's easier said that done but try bot to worry. And step away from Google. Google is not your friend!

Hope you have a totally uneventful rest of your pregnancy! Xx

itshappening · 29/12/2017 01:26

Just wondering, has anyone had pain with the haematomas? I had some red blood after a sudden pain a few days ago. Now I am paranoid that every pain in the abdominal area, especially lower abdominal, is the bleed getting bigger! It feels sore to bend, stretch, move about or sneeze. I guess that could be many things though. Wretched haematomas!

ClareB83 · 29/12/2017 08:10

Not with my hematoma. But my UTI hurt and I've had some round ligament pain.

Roystonv · 29/12/2017 08:18

My diagnosis for similar was cervical erosion both pregnancies. No one told me what was happening until I went into labour the first time and midwife reading notes said Oh I see you have had ce! Many years ago now two healthy adult dc. Was a miserable time though so wishing you all the best and ask them to explain asap.

itshappening · 29/12/2017 10:18

Thanks Clare, I am hoping it is something else like ligament pain. Hope you are doing well.

ClareB83 · 29/12/2017 10:22

Yes thanks @itshappening, I'm 18 weeks today and Looking forward to the next scan.

itshappening · 29/12/2017 10:47

Oh good. I am visiting my relations who are twins today, you are going to have the best time!

itshappening · 03/01/2018 20:09

Hope everyone is doing ok. I have a private Nuchal scan tomorrow at which I am hoping not to get bad news about the status of the haematoma, well or about anything, but if all looks similar to last time I am going to ask if they can measure the haematoma for monitoring purposes.

ClareB83 · 03/01/2018 20:38

I always get them to measure it, regardless of the type of scan. At the last one the sonographer just said "at 16 weeks? Pff no that's all gone!".
