30 weeks - how much should I be eating?

How much should I be eating now? My typical day is some toast for breakfast, a small roll for lunch, an afternoon snack of 2 biscuits, my main meal and a couple of rich tea in the evening with a cuppa. Is this Ok?

Quantity fine but quality seems a bit poor.

Up for fruit and veg big time.

RemainOptimistic · 19/12/2017 17:38

As much as you like! Are you trying to diet / control calories?

LaBelleSausage · 19/12/2017 18:33

A bit short on fruit and veg so I'd add a prenatal vitamin

Oysterbabe · 19/12/2017 18:43

Just eat to suit your appetite.

MRSTIGERTOES · 19/12/2017 20:01

My main meal consists of potatoes with either veg or salad and also try to opt for salad sometimes in my roll. I have put on 12kg so far so seems like a massive amount so trying to be better over the last few weeks and upto birth.
I'm not trying to diet but conscious of not eating for 2!
Will try and get a few fruit portions in between meals. Just want to make sure baby is getting enough of what it needs

Toast (2 slices with butter and preserve) - 300 calories
Roll - guessing around 300 calories
2 biscuits - 100 calories
Dinner - approx 500 calories
2 biscuits - 100 calories

I know I’ve just guessed estimate calories but I would say you’re having around 1300, which is only 100 calories more than what is considered a weight loss diet. It is advised that women consume 2000 a day and around 2300-2500 in the third trimester of pregnancy so to me it sounds like you need more. (I’m an eating disorders practitioner)

Are you noticing any side effects like low energy, tiredness, irritability etc? Some of these things are normal in pregnancy but by upping your intake you might find they improve.
You could try adding cereal to your breakfast and an extra snack to your lunch like a packet of crisps or yoghurt (or both if you can manage it).
Are you worried about the changes in your body which could be leading you to restrict your intake or have you always eaten small amounts like you describe above?

I have hyperemesis and even though I have days when I don't feel sick, I have had no appetite in pregnancy at all. I am 37 weeks and lost 0.5kg this last week. I've had very limited fruit and veg, just bland stuff. My midwife and obstetrician is not concerned at all. However, I'm completely drained!

MRSTIGERTOES · 19/12/2017 20:10

When you list it out like that, the calorie intake sounds awful! I suppose I have tried to "be good" as I am conscious of putting on too much weight which may affect baby. I was around 11st 3 before pregnancy but did pile on weight in the first trimester resulting in the 12kg gain so far! I have no problem upping the intake if needed

I was told to eat to my appetite, which wasn’t huge during pregnancy, and the baby would take what it needs, if anyone was going to go short it would be me. I only gained 11kg but had an almost 4kg baby. If your planning on bf be prepared to eat a vast quantity of food though

MRSTIGERTOES · 19/12/2017 20:11

Sorry, forgot to answer your previous question mrssmith1415. Have been feeling more tired and lethargic lately but have put that down to bring in the last trimester!

I just eat when I am hungry, altho lately I feel like I'm eating everything (hard to resist Christmas chocs).

RemainOptimistic · 22/12/2017 00:41

I invented a new mantra when LO was around 6 months old - yogurt is trifle for fat people Grin since I'd gained so much and bf kept it all on!

mindutopia · 22/12/2017 07:47

I wouldn’t focus on quantity. Eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full, but try to get plenty of fruit, veg and healthy protein if you can afford it. What you’re eating sounds very carb based, which will put more weight on you of course, but mainly it’s just not very rich in nutrients or protein.

Bellamuerte · 22/12/2017 09:53

My midwife told me to eat about 2000 calories per day, including lots of vegetables and protein and a glass of milk. Your diet sounds very heavy on carbs and low in protein and vegetables, as well as not having enough calories. I'd suggest increasing your calories and eating more yogurt and fruit. I'm also very conscious of weight gain but you can lose weight afterwards and being thin isn't worth damaging your baby.

If you’re feeling full I’d say that was fine; I probably ate a few more sweet things than you but I wasn’t massively different.

Mumbofeet · 22/12/2017 17:11

OP i could have written this post myself! I have also put on 12kg, weighed the same as you pre pregnancy and piled it all on in the first trimester. Im now 30 weeks and i haven't put any weight on over the last few weeks. My appetites decreased and I've started feeling sick. Im just eating my 3 meals a day, hoping that the rest of the weight i put on now will be just baby
