Getting only white babygrows?

Hi everyone,

Just wondered if anyone only got simple white babygrows? This is our first child and I plan to have her in babygrows day and night for the first 3 months or so. A big part of me thinks, she'll have a cardigan on anyway, which could be a nice pop of colour.

The issue is that I look at most babygrow packs with colours/patterns and like maybe 1 out of the three (I am picky, I know). Throw in that they are cheaper and I could probably be washed at slightly higher temperatures, and it seems like a no-brainer - but I also don't want to be the weird mum who only dresses her daughter in white.

I am not sure what to expect gift-wise, as my family lives abroad, DH's family isn't big on gift-giving and our friends are generally not too keen on kids. I am sure we'll get a few outfits here and there, but I doubt anything "basic", e.g. coloured babygrows, will be gifted to us.

Anyway, anyone here who only got white babygrows? Good idea? Bad idea?

I suppose worst case, I could always dye them.

We use cloth and gave up babygrows very quickly. They are too short on the body before they fit the legs, so they looked awful and uncomfortable.
T shirts and hareem pants for the win!

Mine was in these for the first few weeks:

I got bored of the white though and sent dp out to get some nice colourful ones. Stripy ones were a favourite.
Oh and despite boil washing and using vanish I never did get some of the Korma poo stains out.

I'm with you on keeping them in babygrows for the first few months - I largely did the same as proper clothes are an unnecessary faff and they grow out of them in minutes.

Thirded!

I wanted something other than wall to wall pink for DD. Gap (when on 40% off), Next, JL all good for quirky designs if that's what you like. I also - with a bit of digging - found lovely unisex things for her from Tesco/F&F, Sainsbury's, Asda, La Redoute (on sale) and elsewhere.

And fwiw I do still care what she's wearing, even three months in and covered in poo!

I second everyone about poo stains. DC1 did a few explosive poos but for DD2 about 80% of her poos went out of the nappy up the back of the babygro. Funnel shaped butt crack I think! Anyway despite napisan, biotex etc they would not shift. I changed to buying plain coloured or patterned ones pretty quickly. Yes there was often one of the multipack I didn't like so much, kept it for night or cold days with a jumper/pramsuit on top.

My baby suffers with chronic constipation so has never got poo on her clothes (she's 1 now) and I very rarely have to change her during the day so you could be "lucky" like me! I do like nice outfits on babies though, but to each their own.

White seems like a good idea until you are dealing with leakage.

TherealDeeBliss · 18/12/2017 15:14

My youngest was in baby gro day and night until he was 1! I avoided white ones tbh as they tend to get a bit stained after a while

Spudlet · 18/12/2017 15:16

We did white ones at night, brightly coloured ones in the day. Then I felt like we weren't spending all day in pyjamas.

I started doing 'clothes' at three months old or so - felt like a watershed moment! Just one of the many teeny tiny milestones.

MadameJosephine · 18/12/2017 15:16

There is nothing quite as beautiful as a new baby in a plain white babygro. I used to put DD in them at night until she was about 2 and only stopped then because I couldn’t find any to fit her!

Equimum · 18/12/2017 15:19

We only bought white babygrows in preparation for our first child. They were all we used until he grew out of newborn size, and we then mixed plain white, and plain baby blue with a few ‘special’ babygrows that we chose individually. At that point, having a mix of colour was less problematic, because he also had white bedding for the Moses basket and always wore white vests, so there was always enough for a load.

TeddyIsaHe · 18/12/2017 15:19

Excellent idea. I dressed Dd in tiny outfits (WHY?) and the next one will probably live in onesies till they’re 3.

minipie · 18/12/2017 15:21

Oh yes also if your baby is a bit sicky white is not ideal, the milk stains will go yellow (even if not immediately, over time)

And remember you may not be able to use mega strength bio cleaning agents if your dc has sensitive skin

BrokenBattleDroid · 18/12/2017 15:25

I had all white babygros coming out my ears as I was given loads of different ones as hand me downs.

I found some were much better than others. I liked ones that had a proper cuff (next I think) as they stayed in place at the wrist. Some had a much looser sleeve and slipped down the arm which wasn't so practical. Even better if the cuff had a fold over mitt (in case you have a baby who likes to claw their own face).

There's also a huge variation in length, so some were short and wide and would get grown out of quickly. Longer and thinner were better, even on my very round babies, as their toes didn't get squashed by the babygro when they stretched their legs out.

PickingOakum · 18/12/2017 15:27

The problem I found with all white baby gros, particularly from supermarkets, was that the cotton was too thin to be warm enough, even if dd had a long sleeve vest underneath and a cardigan over the top. Her feet and legs seemed to get too cold. I also found them very fiddly and they seemed on the small side.

I found things like fleecy dungarees over a long sleeved vest worked better for us or tights with a long knitted dress type thing. At night, dd ended up in patterned sleepsuits because they tended to be a heavier cotton.

So I'd say try the white babygro thing but keep an open mind. I now look back and suspect that dd didn't sleep so well in the early days because she was cold at night in those thin babygros and vests with only cellular blankets over the top.

moggle · 18/12/2017 15:29

I found long sleeve vest and footed stretchy trousers from H&M my favourite daytime clothing for DD up to about 4m (only stopped then as it got warm!). and I've bought more for our twins due in Jan. Baby grows are fine too - we have plenty- but i find the poppers a faff and much rather just pull trousers off and then you've just got 2 or 3 on the vest.
I'd forgotten but sorting out newborn clothes we did get a lot of white babygros for DD which is handy as twins are both boys. But I agree with the person who says just save the patterns you don't like for night time... that's what I did with all the pale pink stuff we got given forDD she looked terrible in it!

BigBaboonBum · 18/12/2017 15:30

I only had white with both of my boys (and will this time with my next boy!). It’s just simpler and easier to see if they’ve spitted up or anything and need changing. They also had jackets/cardies and hats and things when they went out for some colour, but I just like my babies looking clean and having white/cream sleepsuits/indies/vests suits us and makes life easier.
I do always have a going Home outfit though from the hospital which is usually some kind of cute animal outfit Xmas Smile

PickingOakum · 18/12/2017 15:30

I probably need to mention that we live in a semi-rural area in the North where temperatures can get low at night.

jimijack · 18/12/2017 15:41

That's all mine lived in for over a year.

  1. wash brilliantly
  2. dry dead dead quick, on the radiators
  3. so cheap that if stained with poo, vom, food etc, just bin um
  4. doesn't matter if you go through 3,4,5 a day, you always have plenty
  5. great for growing bodies, comfy, loads of stretching in them
  6. warm toes always covered up But most of all....they make life so chuffing easy and that's what you need more than anything in the first year...an easy life.

Do it...
