Genuinely feeling so much hungrier

I know everyone says that 'eating for two' is such a myth in pregnancy and you really don't need any extra calories until the final trimester, but I'm struggling to see how this can be true.
I'm 22 weeks now and very active, still exercising etc and trying not to overeat for the sake of it. But in the past few days I have just felt constantly hungry and unsatisfied after eating.
I ended up eating my lunch at 10.30am at work today!
Has anyone else found this??

Yes!
One day I was fine, the next day (and there on) I was completely ravenous for anything I could get my hands on.
Still got a super tiny bump at 39 weeks but baby is a good size so I'm guessing I must have needed it

It's fine to eat to hunger, it just means don't use it as an excuse to scoff all the unhealthy stuff you would normally restrict yourself. If you have quite a small appetite usually I think it's most noticeable.

mindutopia · 18/12/2017 12:52

You'll go through times when you feel you need more than others times. I definitely went through this, it might have been around the same time too. I always lose my appetite in 1st tri into early 2nd tri. I suspect when it comes back, I just feel extra hungry to make up for what I wasn't eating before. It really was just a phase. If I was genuinely hungry, I ate. I'm 32 weeks now and I don't feel nearly as hungry as I have at earlier points and I've put on a healthy amount of weight. So I think just trust your body and go with it. Maybe pack some healthy snacks for mid-morning and afternoon.

I get insanely hungry in the first trimester and generally put on half a stone. Then my appetite goes more or less back to normal for the rest of the pregnancy. I think it's just what my body "wants" to lay down for breastfeeding - last time it stuck around until 9 months pp and then suddenly fell off when my baby started eating more solids.

Eating to hunger is fine, just try to keep a reasonably balanced diet.

Happened to me too. Was nauseous and could barely eat for weeks, then woke up starving one morning and that was it until I gave birth. Both DH and DM said they'd never seen anything like it Grin

Pregnant with DC2 and still nauseous, waiting to be hungry!

IsaSchmisa · 18/12/2017 14:01

Pregnancy hunger is not like other hunger. Sometimes you're just unfillable. I took the view that I'd rather have more weight to shift later than risk not giving the baby enough.

I'd also think about what you're eating and what you want to eat. So for example, could it be not so much that you're hungry but there's a particular thing you want, needing iron for example? Ie if what you eat isn't satisfying you it could be the things not the amounts, if that makes sense.

FarAwayFromLand · 18/12/2017 14:03

Yeah I'm eating every 90 mins or so. Small but often. Usually bad stuff! Lots and lots of chocolate. Blush

crackerjacket · 18/12/2017 14:06

I was famished during the entire pregnancy. Waking up at 2am for sandwiches and cereal, I was bloody ravenous! Must have been having about 3000 cals per day.

Passthecake30 · 18/12/2017 14:09

I was a shocker, huge man size roast dinners washed down by a bowl full of porridge anyone?

Daisy91 · 18/12/2017 15:21

Me too! And it's not for healthy food either... I'm worried as I have gained a few pounds because of it now.

I feel like I should be this wholesome pregnant person eating salad, vegetables and nutritious things whilst going for lots of walks. But all I want is pizza and chocolate....

JoJoSM2 · 18/12/2017 15:55

I’m only 12.5 weeks but I’m starving 2h after a massive bowl of porridge for breakfast.

BillywigSting · 18/12/2017 15:58

Not at all unreasonable, I was ravenous when I was pregnant and weighed less after ds was born than when he was conceived.

I don't believe the 'only need 100 extra calories' thing at all.

I ate ALL of the food.

BillywigSting · 18/12/2017 15:59

Cross post, I remember waking up at 2am to eat biscuits and drink whole milk because the hunger had woken me up (every night for three months)

AdoraBell · 18/12/2017 16:00

I would say if you are hungry then eat, but eat healthy things.

The way my Doctor explained eating for two, or three in my case, was twice as much veg and fruit, for the vitamins, a little more protein and a smidge more carbs/sugar.

Mrstobe90 · 18/12/2017 16:47

Every few weeks you’ll get a few days where you’re utterly starving and that’ll be when baby is having a growth spurt :)

Feelingstressed444 · 18/12/2017 22:09

Thanks for all of the helpful comments ladies, I feel so reassured that it's not just me! It doesn't help that it's Christmas so there's good everywhere!

Second trimester was by far the hungriest for me - not every day, but some days it was just bonkers! Listen to your body, eat when you need to and don't when you don't.
