Six weeks pregnancy insomnia

Hello! Grin

I'm six weeks pregnant, found out two weeks ago. We are really happy with the news as we had been trying for 11 months.

I've had really bad morning sickness kick in and have been off work this week. It's coming at night time around 10pm and lasting all night. I'm exhausted because of being awake due to it and the anti sickness isn't working really.

I can't sleep whatsoever, I feel too tired and twitchy. Like restless leg syndrome and I can't lay still due to feeling so rough.

It's driving me nuts and when I rang my boss to let her know she asked me what the time frame would be Hmm

Any tips to wind down/feeling guilty about being off?

I felt exactly like this at 6 weeks. Time will be the best healer here but you can alleviate things a bit by maybe trying a few of the things I did:

  • going to bed early (8 ish)
  • elevating the feet slightly (prop them on a pillow) while in bed
  • keeping a jar of snacks by the bed (eating through the nausea)
  • taking anti emetic meds

I had insomnia from 5-10 weeks and was also horribly sick until 23 weeks. Agree with looking that going to bed early helped I never had trouble going to sleep but would wake after modnight for hours. So earlier I went to bed more sleep I got. Also had to have crackers by bedside and eat before I even sat up in the morning. Didn’t stop me feeling horrendous but it took the edge off!

Ha yes the time frame question Hmm I got asked that by my work too. I basically said I have no way of knowing, morning (all day) sickness is impossible to predict.

Honestly you just need to ride it out and put yourself first. I had so much time off at the start because of morning sickness but I just couldn't do my job whilst throwing up - I'm a teacher. I also had bad insomnia but that was later on. If you can't sleep at night I'd try to sleep during the day instead and don't feel bad about being off work. Bubblegum chewing gum and boiled sweets helped me with the sickness. Also you could try antisickness bands.

Good luck with everything Thanks

Aww thank you for your responses and ideas!
I'm trying most of them so will plod on.

I can't believe work asked me that question. I always cover everyone else's sickness so I guess they'll have to lump it and cover me.

Thanks again Grin

Hiya, also try some Olbas Oil on a hanky and sniff it, when I had Gallstones and it made me wanna hurl that really helped as it's a sharp strong smell. Might help with nausea along with something ginger!
Good luck

I was the same 4-8 weeks. It was like a viscous cycle. But having a small snack by my bed helped, even tho he thought of it made me feel worse. Once I ate it I felt a bit better. Re insomnia, I just had to learnt o accept when I was awake. Sometimes I got up and went downstairs for 30-45 mins to maybe read or watch a bit of tv..I'd then be better when I went back upstairs again and would actually fall back to sleep. It has passed now at 10 weeks but now I'm still.up in the night to pee...many times! Grin Good luck!

I feel your pain OP! I’m currently 14 weeks and spent the first 12 weeks of the pregnancy either being sick, feeling sick or wanting to be sick. It was absolutely horrific but I promise you that when you see your baby on your first scan it will all pale into insignificance. Some things that really helped me this time:

  • sea bands
  • eating little and often and mostly carbs (bread/pasta/biscuits )
  • snacks by the bed so those nighttime hunger holes
  • haagan daz ice cream for some reason, esp cookies and cream variety
-sipping either very hot or very cold water (through a straw). I found if I was slightly dehydrated that the sickness increased tenfold. It’s as though the build up of hormones needed flushing out so ensure you stay nice and hydrated.

On the sleeping front, I’m afraid I can’t help on that one as I’m still in the throes of insomnia myself. I get about 4 hours of deep sleep then the rest is just dosing. I did find that the folic acid tablet I was taking at night wasn’t helping matters so I’ve switched that to breakfast time and I seem to be able to get off to sleep a lot quicker. Just can’t seem to stay there which is rather frustrating!
