just wondering, has anyone ever heard of women being refused a surgical termination based on medical grounds?

if so what were the medical grounds?

In which country?

DelphiniumBlue · 14/12/2017 21:26

Do you mean that the medical grounds were insufficient for the termination to proceed? Or that the termination could not proceed for medical reasons?

canderella · 14/12/2017 21:28

in the UK..
as in the termination could not proceed for medical reasons concerning the woman on the day such as medication prior illness etc

I would be surprised to hear this as pregnancy and birth takes a major toll on the body.

As in medically unfit for surgery?

Or medical reason put forward as grounds for abortion, but deemed inadequate justification and the surgical termination was refused?

SilverdaleGlen · 14/12/2017 21:30

No, but I imagine if there was a concern for complications it would be the same as any other medical procedure.

For example an allergy to anaesthetic,
Or a patient on a blood thinners??

Alanna1 · 14/12/2017 21:31

Isn’t a medical termination done under anaesthetic? So an anaesthetist can say you are not fit for a general anaesthetic?

sparechange · 14/12/2017 21:36

Sort of... a TFMR after 20 weeks where it was deemed too late for a surgical termination so would have to be a medical one (ie an induced birth)
Nothing to do with medications though

If a general anaesthetic was involved, then any condition that would increase the risk of anaesthesia to an unacceptable level would be grounds. So difficult airway, current chest infection, unstable blood pressure that can't be stabilised, electrolyte imbalance, etc.
