Breech babies!

Hi!
I'm sure there have been loaaaaads of previous threads about breech babies but I thought I'd start a new one!
So I am 32 weeks and baby has been breech since 28 weeks. I am having increased surveillance due to my DD having spina bifida but it just happens that the breech thing was picked up too!
There is still loads of time for baby to turn, and I have a scan next week at 33 weeks.
Are any of you carrying breech babies? Or have any of you had babies who have turned on their own?
...OR maybe never turned at all!?
All breech stories welcome!
:)

Both of mine went from breech (around 30 weeks and then 32 weeks with next) and went oblique until about 35-36 weeks... and they were absolutely freaking massive so my stomach looked mighty freaky sometimes!! Lol.
Have you tried going on your hands and knees? Worked wonders for mine, it’s supposed to give them more room and encourage them to move around. Just go on your hands and knees so your belly is hanging down (also felt amazing on my back because it takes all the weight off Xmas Smile )
I was a breech baby too but my mum ended in a section... that said, it was 30 years ago and she found out in labour!
Good luck Flowers

Well it’s more like elbows and knees really 🤔

Notreallyarsed · 13/12/2017 15:59

We found out DD was (footling) breech when her feet, legs and bum came out in the hospital car park!!! I remember hollering on the way up to the maternity unit “feet, feet, this isn’t right, FEEEEEEET!” She was bizarrely my shortest, easiest and most stress free labour!

Anna2006 · 13/12/2017 16:01

@emcharlierush midwife believes my baby is still breech at moment (although isn’t 100% as only the thinks that’s from palpitations) I’m 32+3.

My next appointment is at 33+4 so will see what she says then. But she said they won’t worry until 36 week appointment an if they still believe it will be breech will send me for scan to check then. Lots still turn inbetween that time. An they can manually try and turn with an ECV if you agree to that.

I’m leaning over my birthball in evening am rocking as much as poss. An doing hip rotations on my ball to open up pelvis to make room for them to spin. About all we can do for now ☺️☺️

lostintranslocation · 13/12/2017 16:04

My breech stayed put. Tried ECV, but that was incredibly uncomfortable and didn't work. Was offered breech delivery, as I was at a specialist hospital, but declined and went for section in the end. I had so little fluid I think there was just not enough wiggle room for her to turn! Will you try a breech delivery if yours stays put?

Clipperstea · 13/12/2017 16:06

I had a breech baby and he was trying to move himself into position but got into a tangle with his cord so had a emcs.

BearPear · 13/12/2017 16:06

One bum-first and one footling breech here. I think these days they would insist on a C-section but in the early 90s they were both delivered vaginally by the same registrar, 23 months apart. Had a pelvic scan first to make sure there was "clearance" for the head.

MajorMotherSmall · 13/12/2017 16:06

They believed my DC to be the head down right the way through pregnancy. Then they checked when I went into hospital in labour and found DC was coming out bum first. Too far in birth canal for CS so had to do it naturally. In other countries they have loads of breech births but consequently also have more experience for it! If I have another DC I'm torn between wanting extra scanning to check, and insisting on doing it naturally again anyway.

Expectingbsbunumber2 · 13/12/2017 16:22

At 36 weeks I found out baby was breech but by the next week he had turned on his own. Oh did I know he had turned it was so uncomfortable

Emcharlierush · 13/12/2017 16:26

I don't know whether my hospital let's you have them vaginally if they're breech? But to be honest, I kind of just go with the flow! If they told me it was safe and they were confident to deliver a breech baby I would give it a go! Similarly if I had to have a c section, I'd be gutted, but I would just go with their opinion. (Gutted because of the recovery time that is...)
The only thing I'm not keen on is the idea of an ECV. Mainly because I'm of the opinion 'what will be will be'. I don't want them to push her around in there unduly...she's the way she wants to be and that's fine by me!

My hospital said they wouldn’t have let me if they’d known, it was only the fact she was on her way out as I got into the room that meant they didn’t section me.

crackerjacket · 13/12/2017 16:36

Both mine were breech.

Had an EMCS with my first (didn't realise he was breech till I was 5 cms) and then an ELCS with DD as she was breech too but we knew about it in advance.

With DS they offered me a try at a vaginal delivery but when I asked the obgyn what he would do the look on his face said it all - C section.

mindutopia · 13/12/2017 17:38

My first was breech. I think she turned around 34 weeks, definitely by 36. I had an all natural home birth with her the next week at 37 weeks, all fine. This one is breech as well and I'm now 31 weeks. I'm not too concerned as I have a wonky pelvis so I know that's probably why they stay breech so long and I'll expect he will turn in plenty of time as well. But I'm doing everything I did last time to encourage better positioning. I really recommend the breech exercises on spinning babies, seeing a chiropractor or cranial osteopath (esp if you have any back/pelvic/hip pain as the misalignment is likely causing both), and gentle exercise, especially swimming. Oh, and be careful about your posture. You can also look into moxibustion as well a bit later on. I didn't do it with my first, but will if this one doesn't turn by 35 weeks. Really most of them do turn, but it's possible to have a vaginal breech birth and lots of people do if that's what you want.

mummyG2C · 13/12/2017 18:35

My DD was breech was whole way through then midwife thought she had turned by 36weeks, she had not we found out at 7cms dilated and ended up with an emergency section. This time am hoping for vaginal birth but having presentation scan at 36 weeks to check if breech again and if so will go for elective as I know no one who has had success with ECV they are apparently very painful and quite often will not work or baby flips back also last time I had an anterior placenta and they said they wouldn't try ECV with anterior placenta as have higher chances of abruption etc so don't think it's an unusual stance to take regarding ECV. I can honestly say the section even being emergency was absolutely fine and the recovery was fine as well, the two days in hospital were the worst part and the only reason I am hoping for vaginal birth this time! I am only getting movements down very low though like last time (currently 26 weeks) so a little concerned this one could be breech as well but plenty of time to turn!

Whereland · 13/12/2017 18:41

I was breech up to 35 weeks and baby turned by itself! I was convinced it wouldn't as head felt firmly wedged under my ribs but I was wrong and it turned. Lots of yoga and spinning babies

Loosemoose28 · 13/12/2017 19:04

Your hospital is not allowed to "not let you". It is entirely your choice how you birth- ideally they will support you to make an informed choice without bias.

Here is a recent medical article on breech.

Duckstar · 13/12/2017 19:11

Ds2 footling breach. Booked in for ELCS, but he came at 35 weeks and so quickly that I had vaginal delivery. 2 pushes and he fell out.

D3 breech. ELCS at 38 weeks.

I couldn’t have ECV because of uterine abnormality, but wouldn’t have had in any event.

Doublechocolatetiffin · 13/12/2017 19:12

My DD was breech, missed in the midwife checks until my 41 week check-up. Previously I’d been told she was head down (although I always thought it odd she wasn’t engaged at all).

We were offered an ECV or c-sec as my hospital wouldn’t deliver a breech baby naturally. We ended up deciding on trying the ECV, it was all a bit rushed from finding out she was breech to having the ECV was only a few hours.

I was lucky that it was actually very straightforward for me. She was turned, with no medication (often they use a muscle relaxant) in 5 mins. It was a bit uncomfortable but not awful.

I was induced a week later and had her vaginally - after a reasonably straightforward if very very long labour!

SprogletsMum · 13/12/2017 19:17

Dc3 was breech. I found out as her bum was crowning. As a pp said she was my fastest labour. Wouldn't necessarily say stress free because there was about 40 million people in the room with me and I don't like people Grin They ran through the Labour ward with me in a wheelchair shouting we've got a breech and practically everyone came to 'see'. We were both totally fine and didn't need any intervention, not even any stitches for me.

Mrsknackered · 13/12/2017 19:18

My breech turned at 37, c-section was anticipated for 38/39 week mark. It felt like I was going to be turned inside out!

bigredboat · 13/12/2017 19:24

Dd was breech from 24 weeks to 37 weeks but she turned by herself in the end (I did the spinning babies exercises). I would've had a section if she hadn't - didn't fancy an ecv.

Expectingbsbunumber2 · 13/12/2017 20:54

When my baby was breech the midwife said to me if he hadn't turned it would be a section.

Emcharlierush · 14/12/2017 10:25

So you can really notice if they turn?! Ahhhhh it freaks me out the thought of them turning at term!! Shock

Hi - I've heard of lots of babies which have turned at the last minute. There's a great site called Spinning Babies for tips on things you can do to encourage your baby to turn.

My DS was breech (all the way through), I had two ECVs which were very uncomfortable but NOT painful. Each time he started to turn then popped straight back to where he was.

I tried everything to turn him on my own including handstands in a swimming pool at 38 weeks!!! Nothing worked.

I decided upon a breech birth, but it ended in an ELCS where they discovered that his cord was extremely short (shortest they'd seen) and he had absolutely no chance of turning or coming out naturally. Sometimes these things are meant to be and having been through that experience I'd say, do all you can to turn your baby if that is your wish, but don't stress because what will be will be.

Good luck :)

AKP79 · 14/12/2017 11:19

Just to add, my best friend who was pregnant at the same time as me had a breech baby which turned at the ECV and she went on to have a very normal delivery.
