Massage - safe?

I'm getting conflicting reports from Google, does anyone know if it is safe to have massage in the second trimester, currently 16 weeks?

Thinking of treating myself to a facial and neck and shoulder massage but would love a full body whilst I'm still comfy lying on my tummy.

I went to the chiropractor at 13 weeks and was adjusted whilst on my front but I wouldn't have been comfortable for any longer than a minute or so and wouldn't allow that further along.

I can't give advice on whether it would be safe but if the Spa/Therapy suite you go to, know you are pregnant they will not allow you to have a regular massage.

Why not go for a specific mum to be treatment? These usually involve a massage and facial but in a comfortable position for you and the baby.

I'm a Massage therapist and also do prenatal. Massage over 12 weeks is fine as long as you have no health conditions - a consultation will be done before your treatment to make sure its safe.

They won't get you to lie on your front. Pregnancy massage is performed lying on your side, with pillow under your head, bump and in-between knees. Some places use a massage chair rather than a bed.

My advice would be to find someone who has a specific pregnancy massage qualification. Even if you're going to a top salon or spa, I would still check that the therapist is qualified. Unfortunately I worked in a Spa where they were happy for anyone to do the pregnancy treatments Hmm

Get a specific pregnancy massage. Often they're given while you're on your side and avoid poking your stomach etc.

I've got my first one booked for Monday at 16+3. Really looking forward to it.

If you're in London area I can let you know if it's any good?

I don't mind lying on my stomach, infact I find it very much more comfortable than lying on my side.

So massage is generally considered safe as long as specially qualified? Do you know the qualification I should be asking for?

I had a pregnancy one last week and it was amazing (32 weeks). I'm wondering if I can fit another in after Christmas before the baby arrives as it was so relaxing

@Zaalitje I would not perform a pregnancy massage with client lying on front and doubt other therapists would do this. The safest position is on your side.

Yes massage is very safe when using appropriate techniques and products, and has loads of benefits for both mum and baby. Prenatal massage is by far the most popular treatment that I perform. I'm trained with Mama Baby Bliss - you can visit their website to see if theres a therapist in your local area. Or if you google "pregnancy massage + your location" then you should get results for those who do that particular treatments. Like I said, if you're having a 'mum to be treatment' in a spa I would just double check that the therapist they give you is trained specifically in Pregnancy Massage.
