Anterior placenta

I'm 17 weeks pregnant and I went for a private gender scan on Saturday, I found out we were having a little boy (yay!) but I also found out I have an anterior placenta, when I asked the sonographer if it was anything to worry about as this is my first pregnancy she didn't reassure me but told me to speak to someone at my 20 week NHS anomaly scan. I just want to see how many others had this and if it caused anything to be different? I know it's meant to stop you feeling movement but I'm sure I've felt flutters when I lie down in the evenings and he was super active on the scan but some reassurance would be lovely! Thanks in advance 🙂

Hello and congratulations on your little boy!! I'm 24 weeks with our first, also a boy GrinGrin
I also have an anterior placenta and to be honest I started feeling kicks all of a sudden a couple days after my 20 weeks scan.. and now their big kicks very regular, super active baby haha!
Congratulations again Thanks

I’ve had placenta to front and to the back and can’t say I noticed a great deal of difference feeling kicks sooner or later.

Congratulations. I am six months with my third baby and two of them have had an anterior placenta, including this one.

That's so good to hear thank you ladies! I'm sure I can feel waves occasionally not every day but now and again and when she then said I won't feel anything for ages I thought I was going mad and I hadn't felt him. Hopefully I'll be like all of you and feel the regular strong kicks in a little while, can't wait!!

I had an anterior placenta, caused no problems at all. I did feel movements slightly later. I think that an anterior placenta could potentially make natural birth difficult if position was near cervix but not in my case. They checked mine at 20 weeks but all ok. My DD was born at 41 weeks. I did have some bleeds early on but no idea if these were related to placenta or not.

Midwife here. The theory is that an anterior placenta can cushion the baby's movements somewhat, and for many women this is the case. Equally, many women feel strong movements regardless. The only time the position of the placenta is a concern from a clinical perspective is if it's low down (covering the entrance to the cervix) or embedded too deeply into the wall of the uterus (placenta accreta / increta / percreta). But if either of those were the case for you, the sonographer would have told you. Being anterior is nothing to worry about :)
Congratulations on your little boy!

I have an anterior placenta (30 weeks) caused no problems for me apart from at times my scan images haven't been as clear and sometimes the Doppler at Midwife checks has been a bit more muffled.

It's my second so I was more aware maybe of movement but the best way I can think to describe it earlier on is like popcorn popping inside your tummy. Very light but feels likelittle pops.

I now feel so much movement and my tummy has started moving all over the place. In fact last night I swear I had an elbow or something poking out so don't worry you will feel lots of movement as baby gets bigger!

Thank you to everyone, that's made me feel a bit more at ease and hopefully all will be ok again at the 20 week scan ☺️
