I'm very early pregnancy and have a work xmas do this week which unfortunately involves a whole day of drinking (or hiding that I am not drinking!)- I wld usually take part in this sort of thing so it will be obvious if I don't drink

What good excuses can I give for not drinking that won't lake it obvious that I might be pregnant?!

This is the worst time of year to be hiding a pregnancy!!

Thank you x

You have a tooth infection and are taking antibiotics? (You're taking metronidazole, in case anyone asks- this is the antibiotic you CANNOT drink on or you will get very very sick)

Mrstobe90 · 10/12/2017 23:49

How about:

I’m on antibiotics for a mild infection?

That usually does the trick without encouraging people to ask any questions xx

LyraTheDaemon · 10/12/2017 23:50

Congratulations! Could you say you're on antibiotics that you can't drink with? Dental?

toffee1000 · 10/12/2017 23:50

Nooooo whenever anyone asks this question on Mumsnet EVERYONE says DO NOT use the antibiotics excuse as everyone will know...

JustPutSomeGlitterOnIt · 10/12/2017 23:51

Your man is also on his Xmas do and you've agreed to pick him up later?

JustPutSomeGlitterOnIt · 10/12/2017 23:51

And congrats!

JollyGiraffe · 10/12/2017 23:53

If you start complaining of toothache this week you'll be more believable Wink

And ig you rock up a few minutes late one day you can say you were held up at the dentist Grin

Prior planning is key!!

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 10/12/2017 23:55

As soon as someone uses the “antibiotics “ excuse it really does say “I’m pregnant “.
JustPutSomeGlitterOn has the best idea.

Urglewurgle · 10/12/2017 23:57

If you say antibiotics all the women will know, or at least suspect.

Go the bar yourself and get lime and soda/tonic and pretend it's vodka or gin.

Or can you drive? Say you have something on early the next day?

Amazing thanks ladies much appreciated!

Cric · 11/12/2017 06:38

I would buy a coke and tell people it is a vodka and coke.

FairfaxAikman · 11/12/2017 06:39

Any chance you can have a quiet word with the barman?

We were out with PIL and I spent the evening drinking "rum and coke" - of course the barman had been asked and was quite happy to forego the rum part.

Whisky2014 · 11/12/2017 06:41

I wouldn't go. Even if you say the old antibiotic for infection thing someone will still ask if you're pregnant. And as soon as someone says the antibiotic thing I immediately think "they're pregnant!"

LisaSimpsonsbff · 11/12/2017 06:57

I have (I think) had some success with claiming I've been suffering from insomnia and the doctor told me to avoid caffeine and alcohol (which also kills two birds with one stone), but it's possible that everyone has seen straight through me! I agree that the antibiotics thing is so, so obvious.

LynetteScavo · 11/12/2017 06:58

Say you went to a party the night before and are still recovering. By the time everyone else has had a few drinks they won't notice.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 11/12/2017 07:06

What exactly is the do, and why does it involve drinking all day? If it's hanging out in the pub then you might get away with fake drinking. If it's something like a brewery tour then I really wouldn't go, as you'll spend all day being asked why you're not drinking...

Chaosofcalm · 11/12/2017 08:35

A doggy tummy. No one ever asks questions about that.

Autumn0909 · 11/12/2017 17:45

I’m in the same position with my work do on Friday night. In the week, I’m going to start complaining of some sort of pain (haven’t decided yet) to try and make it more believable that I’m on antibiotics.
Hope it goes well!

PinkAvocado · 11/12/2017 17:47

Drive or don’t go or pretend your drinks have alcohol in.

If you’re a drinker normally, other excuses will be obvious.

sausagerollsrock · 11/12/2017 17:49

I generally prep myself to say 'oh no not for me thanks, 'big sigh/exhale and head shake' had a few to many last night'.

ApplesTheHare · 11/12/2017 17:51

Pretending to drink worked for me for 4 months. Other people really don't pay that much attention to what you're doing Grin

Spamdex · 11/12/2017 17:52

Just 'drink'. Always have a glass in your hand, raise to your lips occasionally then abandon on a table/tip down the sink in the loo. Move frequently between groups and never get into buying rounds with any groups in particular. Anything else will be commented on. Unless you say you have a massive hangover and start the day with a big greasy bacon sarnie to add to the illusion. Then you can make a comment about the hair of the dog halfway into the event, 'drink' it and then say you feel lousy so off home.

georgie262 · 11/12/2017 18:01

I don't say anything. Keep your wine glass full and keep it in your hand. No one will know if it's your first, second or third glass. Buy tonic water and say it's gin and tonic. No one will notice x
