Anyone over 40 who had their first baby?

I'm 43 and me and DH been trying for baby since we got married 3.5 years ago. I seem to conceive easy enough but am unable to get passed the first 9 weeks without miscarrying. I am currently on my 6th failed pregnancy (plus had 1 x failed IVF where I didn't get pregnant). It's been an indescribable tough time. I am thinking seriously of giving up trying to stop any more pain/heartache.

Has anyone had similar situation and had success with their first baby over 40?

Be good to hear any similar stories that have ended in success.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about how hard its been for you. My friend had her first and only dc at 48 after many years of ivf and mcs. Good luck!

Me. I'm 41 and currently 15 weeks.
This is a donor egg pregnancy following previous miscarriages, my AMH was tested and at the level of a woman of 50+ so I guessed the quality of my eggs was probably at a similar level and the only chance we might have was with DE.

Have you had any tests/treatment?

I had my first baby at 39 after recurrently miscarrying. Tests revealed I had a blood clotting issue so I took aspirin, heparin, progesterone plus high dose vit d (and pregnacare plus) in my next preg which worked.

poppypopsicle - thank you. Wow she really perservered then. Are you able to share how many losses your friend went through before success?

zaalitje - congrats to you. I have been thinking about egg donor. You must be pleased to be 15 weeks. Sorry about yoir tough prior journey 😔 May I ask how many losses you suffered before you went for donor?

Patienceisvirtuous - Congrats on becoming a mum. Sorry for your tough prior journey. I've had numerous tests. Nothing has come back as a problem. The doctors believe it's my eggs/age and it's just about throwing the "lucky dice" and the more I try the more chance I have. I have tried progesterone, clexane and many vits already. I do believe it's my eggs but have other friends over 40 who've had babies with zero miscarriages or any problems.

Not first but was 39 when DS1 was born and 40 when DS2 was born. Wishing you lots of luck and a 'sticky' baby soon xx

I’m 42 and currently 35.3 Weeks with a little girl. Any fertility journey is such a rollercoaster of emotions and after a suspended IUI treatment...followed by a failed IUI treatment & 3 failed rounds of IVF...the last and final round worked (with my eggs that I got frozen at the age of 33). Im getting induced at 39 Weeks and still can’t actually believe it! I guess I will at the 2am feeds! x

Hi have you tried DHEA? Controversial for some - I'm 39 and currently sat with my 7 week old after 8 years of trying, 2 failed ivf's and 3 miscarriages. We were due to go for a final ivf in March with a new provider who changed our vitamin and drug regime in January to get us ready for the March ivf. We were considering egg donation at this stage as the issue seemed to be quality of my eggs. One of the changes was DHEA I can't say for sure that's what worked but it was the biggest change I made and there is lots of research about how it improves egg quality. Best of luck.

I'm sat here breastfeeding my 4 month old daughter who is the product of 4 rounds of ivf. She is from a donor egg as, at my age, my eggs were just not good enough. I'm 43 and going donor egg was the best decision I've ever made.

  1. I've had health problems since which have added to the challenge but got pregnant without ivf and now have a 10 year old. I'm sorry that you have had so many setbacks and hope all goes well Thanks

Hi mommybear1. My goodness so sorry to hear of your very tough journey. You must be very strong. DHEA rungs a bell. When I did my one round of IVF I took a tablet called Dexamethasone (apparently helps egg quality) is this the same thing? Huge congrats on your miracle baby x

Thank you jellycat1 Smile

Purplelynny17, sorry to hear about your tough journey. Huge congrats though on the beautiful result of yours. It's so nice to hear happy endings x

Thank you shhhfastasleep and I hope your health problems are under control. Flowers

Hi I think they are similar but I am not sure they are the same (could be worth checking with your ivf dr?) although mine were prescribed the dr advised me on dosage and told me to buy separately ie they didn't form part of the ivf package meds. There is also a good book called improving egg quality which I found useful in cutting out / adding things into my diet etc. Best of luck with your journey

Thank You! x

zaalitje · 12/12/2017 04:42

lou we believe it was at least 3 losses, although with one I had all the symptoms of being pregnant and was late but never got the bfp.

Only started trying at 39 so time was always going to be against me, once I saw my AMH levels and learnt of my mums early menopause (at 35) I felt donor conception was the only way we might achieve our goal.
