Pregnant, but no doctor!

Hey,

So I found out last night I'm pregnant (terrified/elated! haha)!! I have endometriosis and had an early miscarriage at 6 weeks about 3 months ago, so am so thrilled. I've had morning sickness the last 3 days, oh and it's my first :-)

I've moved to a new area and we don't have a doctor here. I just sent my patient registration form, but have been told it will be a few working days before I am allowed to even make an appointment, I'm then aware there probably won't be any available for a while! I called my old doctor and they won't see me because I'm now out of practice boundary... what should I do? is it important to go to the doctors quickly? I don't even really know what they do if I'm completely honest!

Thanks so much x

Don’t panic, in my area you don’t see a GP at all, you self refer to a midwife who then does your booking in appointment at around 10 weeks.
A GP won’t actually do anything, they don’t even do a pregnancy test as there’s are only as reliable as home pregnancy tests are. Waiting a few days to register will be absolutely fine!
Congratulations!

You don't need a doctor right now. You will need referral to a midwife in time for any tests and scans you want at the end of trimester one but the time scales you've got are ok for that. Don't stress. If you start to bleed or the vomiting gets too much you would go to a and e anyway. This is not a problem. Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile

My GP just sort of looked at me blankly when i went in and then got confused as to why i was there at all! I think they usually just leave it up to the midwife so as long as you get registered and get on the books asap with the new surgery they should be able to get you his or her number so they can get you booked in for your 10 week appointment and then get you in for a 12 week scan?

I'd give the midwife a call and see what they say as well at the same time. In my general experience you have to push a bit with the NHS....

You’ll be fine. As everyone’s said, no huge rush, your booking in won’t be for a little while, but it may be worth asking at the doctors what the procedure is - referral through GP or self referral to the midwife,

All you need to do is phone the new surgery and ask for the Midwife referral number or form which they should just hand over. Midwives run through the community and hospital not the GP so you don't need any kind of official referral from one.

Agree with all other posts, I didn't even see my Dr about my pregnancy, I self referred via a form on my local NHS trust's website and then had my booking in appointment at approx 8 weeks at my local hospital.

Are you in the UK? I would just call the surgery receptionist and tell them you are pregnant and ask to be referred to the midwives or just look up the midwives number yourself and call them. I've never seen the GP in any of my pregnancies. I did this time have to go pick up a form to fill out from the receptionist, but otherwise, I've made all my appts and gone straight to the midwife team. I found their number online.
