Hi everyone,

I’m currently 24+5 and I had my GTT test yesterday as on my last scan 2 weeks ago baby was measuring 2 weeks larger on his tummy than he should have been.
Turns out I have gestational diabetes! I do have a raised BMI but this has come as a shock. I’m seeing a diabetes specialist tomorrow to go through my diet and to be shown how to test my blood sugars, but I was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as me, or has been through it and can give me any tips?
I’m feeling pretty deflated about it and worrying about all the foods I’m now going to have to cut out.
I feel as though the next 3 months are going to be a nightmare!

Ah I've been there and it's shit Flowers

The good news is they caught it now so you can deal with it. Have a look a bit further down the page - another new GD poster has posted and there's some helpful links and stuff on there.

You'll be bored with the diet and sometimes frustrated but you'll both be fine!

I sort of have it - Glucose intolerance - so I am on the Gestational Diabetes diet and test 3 times a day. I had it from 25 weeks in my last pregnancy too. I have been on the diet for 19 weeks and another 16 or so to go...I have good days and bad but the bad is because I am a little piggy and feel sorry for myself. The diet and exercise has me feeling and looking miles better, I have less pains, less headaches, less cramps, less tiredness and my mental health is stronger but I do miss treats. I lost a stone in the first trimester and have not put on a pound yet but baby is measuring fine and I have a big bump. So on the positive side I am eating healthy, feeling good and maintaining a better weight. My levels are getting worse so I am likely to be put on insulin in the next week or so but I do not mind as it is temporary (I hope). I got too big on my first pregnancy and did not lose any so I am spinning mine as a positive to make me healthier and stronger and change habits going forward. Look at it as getting you trained in the last stretch so you have bags of energy for your new baby 🙂

I'm nervous about this. Can someone talk me through how likely it is? I have a bmi of 30 so obese, and recently eating ado much rubbish. What is a GD diet exactly? Can I prevent it by eating healthy now? I'm 12 weeks

Being overweight is a risk factor but it certainly doesn't guarantee GD. In fact I was the only overweight one I saw in my clinic - the rest were all slim. I would say age was more of a common factor than anything else. They all seemed to be late 30's, as I was.

But mostly it's hormonal - your placenta just gets to be too much for your pancreas/muscles.
