Marginal/velamentous cord insertion

Has anyone had this?

16 week pregnant with DCDA twin girls. Twin 2 is 21% smaller than twin 1. Yesterday a scan revealed that her cord didn't implant centrally and this could be why she's not growing as well as twin 1.

Sonographer didn't seem very concerned - she said that 'overall there are more good news than bad!". Fluid and heartbeat very good in both babies.

Does anyone have any experience? I've since read that this could cause more maternal bleeding and low weight at birth or increase the need for a CS. Thank you.

I have a marginal cord insertion and it's not caused a single problem at all. It was mentioned briefly at 12 week scan, I'm now almost 35 weeks and it hasn't been brought up since!

Thanks @AutumnLeavesandCandleLights.

Can I ask if your DC seems to be growing nicely based on scans/bump measurements?

Yes I had this with DS. Never noticed until his birth when the cord almost broke as they were removing my placenta. Didn't seem to cause him any other issues as he was nearly 11lb

I have velamentous cord insertion, 36 weeks at the moment and regular growth scans show it hasn’t caused any issues so far. Everyone I’ve spoken to has said the main worry is after birth risk of cord snapping but once they’re aware of it they won’t pull on it etc so should be avoided. I was so worried to start with but have asked lots of questions at every appointment and now finally feel more relaxed about it. Do you have a follow up with consultant to discuss?

Thanks all. I'm seeing the consultant at the 20-week scan (just before Christmas) so I can ask lots of questions then. Good to know that it doesn't necessarily cause growth issues, I'm worried for the small twin.

Nope, no problems where growth is concerned! Alongside the marginal cord, I also have pressure on a uterine artery and the combination of the two has been linked to restricted growth so I've had a lot of extra scans, but each time baby is weighing perfectly in the 70th centile so it's not caused any issues so far!

That's great news @AutumnLeavesandCandleLights, good luck with everything.
