When Do I call the GP/Midwife

Hi so new to this I'm not sure where to start!

I found out I was PG on 26th November. As it was before AF was due I have tested each morning since and today I used a Clear Blue digital which confirmed I am 1-2 weeks pregnant. Which makes me 3+6 according to Ovia Pregnancy. I realise this is still incredibly early but I wondered when do I call to see the GP/Midwife? I don't want to call and be laughed at as its so early.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

I would just give your GP surgery a call and ask what the process is, as it's different in many areas of the country. I am 10 weeks now with number 2, but didn't have my first baby in our area now so I was also clueless. I just had to fill out a form from the doctor's surgery and they faxed it directly to the midwife unit, who then made my booking appointment. No need to see a GP. With my previous pregnancy I saw a GP first who then referred me to the midwife.

At our surgery you just fill in a form and they send it to the midwife service and you wait for them to contact you.

Thank you so much for the quick replies! I'll give them and call and see what they say

Ok thank you @AnUtterIdiot I'll try not to think about the dating too much and will wait for confirmation at appointment Smile

I rang the GP practice at 5 and a half weeks I think and then receptionist booked me an initial midwife appointment for the following week. Then my proper booking in appointment was in week 8.

mindutopia · 28/11/2017 14:33

Here we self refer directly to the midwives but I’ve always called around 5 weeks.

Sugarskulllover · 28/11/2017 14:41

I've called my GP surgery and they have said I need to get my pregnancy confirmed with the Doctor and they will then refer me to the Midwife. No surprise there were no appointments available Shock I need to call in the morning for the possibility of a Saturday appointment.

I didn't think that GP's usually confirmed it if you'd have BFP on a HPT! However, having to wait till sat to see anyone is a little annoying. Waiting is the worst at anytime, but particularly in pregnancy!

Sugarskulllover · 28/11/2017 20:26

I bet I'll get to the appointment and they'll
Say they didn't need to see me! I can see it now! I'll double check when I call tomorrow. Thanks @Dorabean

@Sugarskulllover haha, they won't say that, they'll give you the chance to ask any questions and tell you about contacting the midwife, or they'll refer you if it's part of their practice like it is at mine! Makes it easy! Let us know how you get on Smile

Sugarskulllover · 28/11/2017 20:38

Yea that's a good point! My DH has asked me if he needs to come, I told him he didn't have to come to every appointment but the first one might be a good one not to miss if he's free when I get an appointment. I will do thank you again @Dorabean

I can't remember much at all happening at the GP appointment but I'd get your dh to go to the booking in apt with the midwife. Mine was around 8-10 weeks and quite long with lots of questions about family history etc so useful to have your partner there for this

Dorabean · 28/11/2017 20:45

Agreed with Thirty, the booking in appointment is the biggest one and take about an hour! If DH is free and wants to go with you to your GO though then go for it, it's an exciting time for both of you Smile

Nomad86 · 28/11/2017 20:59

That's odd, my GP told me they use the same pregnancy tests you use at home so no point in them confirming it. Second time round I just called and made my six week booking appointment at the hospital.

Sugarskulllover · 28/11/2017 21:19

Maybe it's just my GP surgery. Hmm
Yea I'll get him to come to that one. I have briefly discussed about family history and he started being funny saying things like "well you've got idiolitus" such a fool Grin
Thank you all ladies so helpful!!
