High nuchal

Morning, we have had a very traumatic few days. Had our 12 week scan last Wednesday and sadly our baby has a nuchal measurement of 5.6. We had our cvs test done there and then. After an awful 48hoir wait of many tears and sleepless nights our initial test came back clear for the three main chromosome abnormalities. We now have to wait until the second test results come back. I am an emotional mess and utterly heartbroken. I have no idea what to expect. Our doctor said the initial scan all looked healthy other than the fluid behind baby's neck. I don't know what to think or expect. Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated. I feel so alone.
Thank you

Sorry that you are going through this @Newmummytobe26 it must be such a worrying time for you.
An increased nuchal can also be associated with heart problems so if the CVS results are all negative then you should be referred for a detailed heart scan of the baby but this would probably be in a few weeks time as the baby needs to be a bit bigger for them to see everything properly.
Do you have an appointment to see anyone for follow up or to talk? If not and you want to talk to someone I would call the hospital or your midwife and ask for an appointment.
The charity antenatal results and choices (ARC) is also a brilliant source of support and they are very knowledgeable.

Yeah they mentioned that to us and said if the cvs comes back clear they will be scanning me more and monitoring the development of the baby. We don't have any more appointments booked in yet as they want to wait for the result first. I'm so scared. You see positive stories but I just can't see that being me.

We're going through the same Newmummytobe26, but a few weeks further on. When we had a scan at 11 weeks we found our baby had an NT of 5.4mm. We had a CVS a few days later and thankfully no chromosomal problems were found. It was a long, bvery emotional 2 week wait until we got the results.
We've since had a scan at almost 17 weeks and baby is growing really well and the consultant couldn't find any issues at this stage. I'm now 19 weeks and have the anomaly scan in 2 weeks then a cardiac scan a couple of weeks later. Since seeing the baby again at 17 weeks we're a lot more hopeful about things, but I know there's still along way to go before we'll know if everything is going to be ok.

Thank you for commenting brambles21. I'm a mess!!! Have you felt like you could announce it properly and enjoy being pregnant? Was the rest of your 12 week scan looking well? I feel like I'm in limbo and can't think about anything else. X

We'd already told our parents, then waited till after the CVS results came back before telling friends and then a few weeks later work colleagues.
The rest of the scan was fine but the baby was still still too small at 11 weeks to see much, other than there was a heart beat and two arms and legs.
I'm still a bit wary of telling people though as i worry in a few weeks I won't be pregnant any more and then have to face questions. But at 19 weeks, 2nd pregnancy, I think I look quite pregnant now so there's no hiding it.

Do you know how long until the full CVS results come through? It was exactly 2 weeks for us.

Newmummytobe26 · 28/11/2017 12:50

Yeah my family know and some close friends and it's hard enough going over it again and again. I just wonder when I'd feel happy to share my news with everyone. It's horrible. We've been told two weeks so a week tomorrow. The rest of our scan was looking positive other than the fluid. X

If a positive story would help you, my friend had something similar and an initial DS risk of 1 in 3. Baby was fine and he's now 3. Fingers crossed OP, thinking of you.
