Progesterone pressaries after miscarriage

Hi all, after my miscarriage in August at 9 weeks, I am pregnant again (5+3) have now been put on Progesterone pressaries until 16 weeks. When I went to the hospital on Friday, the consultant spent about 5 minutes in the room and I'm sure she didn't ahve time before to look at my entire history and told me to take them - I didn't even have time to think about any questions to ask in that moment. My progesterone levels earlier this year and early last year where pretty high for someone who was not pregnant at the time the levels were tested, so am now wondering if I actually need to take them? I've read about possible side effects such as shortness of breath (which i have and I know this is a normal pregnancy symptom anyway but I don't want to make it worse) as well as abnormalities in the fetus, although there seems to be some disagreement about that. I will speak to a doctor about this again but am wondering whether anyone else has spoken to their doctor about this and has any feedback?

Also, I had a missed miscarriage last time and am terrified of it happening again - simply not seeing a heartbeat anymore on that screen! Does the progesterone prolong the process of the fetus being expelled when there is a missed miscarriage?

Thanks all.

I have had 3mcs, so due to this i take the cyclogest pessaries twice a day from bfp. This worked for me and i had my 2yo daughter.

I am now 4+5 so started them again this weekend when i found out. I never experienced the shortness of breathe last time though.

To answer your question about MC - yes it would prolong the process IF you were to miscarry. but please dont assume that you will, theres every chance you wont. All my tests came back as normal so the progesterone and also blood thinning injections (from week 6) that i was prescribed with my daughter were both done as a 'it cant do any harm but have been proven to help' view. I like to think they did help.

Hey OP-I found them just fine. I was ready to get off then though!! The good thing was they helped with constipation. I'm 27 weeks now.

I had no bad side effects that you wouldn't usually have with pregnancy. TBH the jury is out as to whether you need them. We'd had x3 early miscarriages so the theory was it a) supported my early pregnancy and b) gave some psychological support as well. I was also on aspirin and 5mg folic acid.

Stick with the -they're not so bad! I found popping up your bum was MUCH easier so do ask for the ones which can be taken either hole ;)

Thanks for the responses ladies - I'm sorry to hear about your losses but your stories are encouraging! I'm also on 75mg of Asperin now btw, another thing they just prescribed without looking at any test results. But then, a friend of mine just had a baby and was told to take baby Aspirin from early on...just in case. She still took it the day she gave birth.

@bettybecks12 again the evidence is mixed on aspirin but it does seem to work for a lot of people and again, where is the harm in it? I hope all goes well - keep in touch and let us know!

Just to say that I was prescribed progesterone by the Coventry recurrent miscarriage clinic and they said recent research shows it doesn't prolong miscarriages - they thought it did but a big study looking at the effect of progesterone found that women who did and didn't have it started bleeding at the same time on average. They told me that your uterine lining doesn't bleed while you're on it but you'd still bleed from the pregnancy if you lost it. I just mention it because that made me feel much better.

I’ve been on the pessaries for a couple of months now and they’re fine. The only ‘side effect’ if you use them vaginally, is needing to use day pads as stuff flows out.
