Rib/chest pain

Not sure whether this is pregnancy related or not as I'm only 17 weeks. I do remember some rib pain with my first baby but I think it was later on? Basically it's a sharp pain in my ribs/upper back when I breathe in or laugh! I've also got a cough which is making it worse. It's too early to be the baby isn't It? Probably just a pulled muscle but paracetamol isn't doing anything and I'm not sure I'm supposed to take ibuprofen.

Please do not take ibuprofen when pregnant. Please contact your midwife or a doctor to check it is not something serious. If you want to take something for it in the meantime take paracetamol only.

Don't worry, I've not taken any ibuprofen. I saw the midwife this week, she just said it could be a pulled muscle but to see the GP if I was worried. I guess I'll do that next week but don't want to overreact if it is just a sprain or something.

I had this when I was about 34 weeks. The midwife and doctors were concerned it was a collapsed lung or a blood clot on my lung. Went to a&e was given an ecg, heparin and a scan to check for clots in my chest.

It turned out to be nothing (just another pregnancy quirk) and went away on its own, but it is worth contacting your midwife to see what they think.

Definitely get it checked out, as you say probably just a pulled muscle but get it checked out for sure.

Ps agree with the others I am sure it is just a strain but I was surprised how seriously my symptoms were taken when I had the same, and it is worth getting it checked out. Hope it is OK.
