Midwife obligations

Hello everyone, first post, first pregnancy, first dealings with any sort of a bump and excited (slightly scared) of having a little bundle of joy!
So, I had my 8 week midwife appointment Wednesday last week. I've had previous kidney problems for years, which I told her about and she agreed I'd need specialist care and monitoring. I was to be booked in for my first scan and have additional visits or check ups. All good. Although I had a funny feeling when she said "renal" ... "that means kidneys doesn't it", at that point I thought maybe she had a dry sense of humour, she looks well seasoned on the front line of midwifery and assume nothing!
Then today I called for my results which I was told were all satisfactory, heamoglobin 14.1 - good. Creatinine levels - no kidney function test performed - hmm ok. Confused
Scan - none booked after speaking to the hospital midwifery department. And consultant letter for 17th Jan! So assuming they don't want to monitor the early stages. I requested a call back & was told she'd call but nothing.Sad So I've phoned before closing and said I believed I'd slipped through the net and really should I be seeing a doctor?
Hopefully it'll be chased up next week. Has anyone else had to chase for scans, check ups or monitoring if a complex case?
Would be interested to hear. Thanks all x

In my own case, the midwife dealt with run of the mill pregnancy related stuff and the consultant dealt with the more complex issues/scans/blood tests.
I'd see your GP rather than try and talk to the midwife. The more complex stuff can be managed by your GP as well as the consultant.
Did you not have a GFR done?

I needed to see a consultant during my pregnancy and didn’t meet them until I was 16 weeks pregnant, and even that was only to have my cervical length scanned. I didn’t see them again until I was 28 weeks. What kidney problem do you have?

I’m also pregnant for the first time and early on in my pregnancy (9 weeks today). As per NICE guidelines, I should be under obstetrician’s care on several different accounts. However, the midwife referred me on to another specialist midwife for my thyroid and I’ve got my scan booked for 12+3 just like anyone else. Other than that, I don’t think they refer you unless there’s a problem or you’re much further on. I think it’s generally in the second and third trimesters that the pregnancy has a much greater impact on your health. Having said that, the midwife did include kidneys in my bloods as mine also have a history of dodginess.

Perhaps you could see your GP if you have concerns?

It's my second but I have ptsd (from an old trauma which was re-triggered recently) and a diagnosis of severe pnd and postpartum psychosis from my first. To say they are laid back would be an understatement. I won't see a consultant until I'm six months pregnant despite the above and having a fairly traumatic delivery where I passed out on the operating table. When I questioned it because knowing a plan has been made for delivery is hugely important for my mental health, I was essentially told tough.

If they haven't booked a 12 week scan for you, definitely chase that up (apologies if my reading comprehension failed). I would chase up about your kidney issues too, possibly through your GP if they know your history.

Hello, thanks for replies Smile
There was no GFR test and I my diagnosis at the time was Acute chronic bi-lateral pyelonephritis. My creatinine levels last time I had them checked 4 years ago were 120 so nearly normal and I was very much fighting fit then (tree surgeon). And when poorly were around 400. So less than half of normal function. But this was in stages of acute infection. I think the Dr is the right course but I didn't want to go over her head and wind her up if she's meant to organise.

Astonishing dinosauratemydaffodils! I would have thought that would be pretty seriously taken! Hmm I think all your comments only enforces the decision to take this to the gp.

Kidney function is not part of routine pregnancy bloods and outwith a midwifes expertise (being responsible for results of tess they have requested). If you feel it needs checking speak to your GP and they can decide.
