What if I have another huge baby?

I'm 9w5d with my DC2 and trying to remain as calm and positive as possible for this much wanted pregnancy.

The one thing that does freak me out a bit is the thought of having another huge baby - my first DD was 11.5 and half lb and I was two weeks overdue when I had her!

As I think I had undiganosed gestational diabetes, this is something that my midwife has says they will monitor me for in this pregnancy. I hope they bloody do! There's no way I want another huge baby - I'm only 5'2" and was absolutely bloody ginormous last time! Will I have extra growth scans etc?

Anyone who has been through similar, please advise and help to reassure me! Confused

Hiya noonoo, my first pregnancy was the same as yours and my little one was born 6 days after my due date at 11lb 10oz! Also due to undiagnosed diabetes.
My second pregnancy I was monitored for diabetes from the start, went straight onto insulin and had two weekly appts at the hospital with the diabetes team. Where they took urine sample and checked what my sugars were. (You are given a book at the beginning to test your blood sugars before and after each meal)
All went well, I had a lot of extra scans after 28 weeks to check babies growth. And I was induced early at 38 +5 days and my son was born 10lb 1oz. So still very big but his sugars didn't drop when born so think I do just have big babies as well as the gestational diabetes.
Sorry for jumbled post, trying to type quickly!

Lots of growth scans and possibly a scheduled c section would be my advice OP - good idea to monitor the sugars but you might find that you just grow big babies! Congratulations on the much wanted new baby

DS1 was 11lbs 9oz at 42 weeks. DS2 was a titchy 8lbs 8oz at 39+6. Like you, it's been suggested that I had undiagnosed gestational diabetes first time round. Second pregnancy I had the GTT, which came back fine, and 3 growth scans which all showed a normal sized baby.

I really wouldn't go off weight but measurements. There was only half a pound between mine and my friends DC but mine was built like a tank while hers was small and dainty. Her newborn stayed in 'newborn' size clothing for 2 1/2 months while mine never fit them, I really would not worry about it too much, if you did have a bigger baby you've done it before and you can do it again Smile

Hi

My first was 11lb 10oz delivered by emergency Caesarian due to her size.

My second was 8lb 10oz delivered by planned Caesarian. A couple of days after due date but this was because I couldn’t deliver her naturally.

I was checked for gestational diabetics - I had to fast then I had to drink a disgusting sugary drink and sit around for a few hours then had blood tests. I was given a voucher to get a free sandwich afterwards from the hospital cafe.

I didn’t have diabetes.

Speak to your midwife about a planned Caesarian if you think this is the way you want to go.

I didn’t get extra scans during my second pregnancy. We all knew my first baby was big whilst I was pregnant but none of the midwives I saw seemed bothered. My midwife laughed at me two weeks before the birth when she advised I was carrying a big baby... I asked how big... I said like a ten pounder and that’s when she laughed in a sort of don’t be daft kind of way. I felt really embarrassed.

My kids are now 12 and 9.

Anyway.....think about what you want and what is worrying you speak to your midwife and push for what you want. Even if it’s only urine dip sticks so you can self monitor the levels of sugar in your urine.

No advice but I am also pregnant with my second after a very large baby, and I'm the same height as you, sending you good luck!

Like others have said, my midwives also laughed it off in my first pregnancy. Makes you feel like shit at the time, I hate to feel annoying or like a pain with healthcare professionals cause I always think they know best, but this time I'm going to have to put my foot down if I don't feel listened too. Make sure they give you all the proper tests and scans and have an obstetrician.

We done this once, we can do it again, right?! Grin

I have that wrong it should read.....

My first was 11lb 10 oz and a couple of days late because I couldn’t deliver her naturally.

My second was by planned Caesarian a week early as per the consultant’s advice.

I found that all HCP in my second pregnancy were very taken aback at the size of my first baby. It was the biggest baby weight that nearly all of them had come across (I asked a few - hoping they'd say they'd delivered a few 12 lbers, but no!). The exception was one midwife whose 4 ft 10 inch friend had delivered a 12 lb baby at home, apparently. I was under consultant care and monitoring the baby's size was taken very seriously. I was almost laughed at for considering VBAC at the start, although they were happy with this plan by the end when it became apparent that this baby was smaller. It didn't happen, but for other reasons.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm pretty much ok with having an 'average' size 7-8lb baby, and it does make me laugh lookinh back at how my MIL kept saying 'No, surely DD1 is 7lb? Babies don't come out at 11lb...' when my DH phoned her to tell her the good news after my DD was born.

I think I will be well looked after in this pregnancy; my midwife has said I can have an elective C-section and will be under consultant-led care so hopefully more closely monitored.

Good luck to everyone who is pregnant and have had large babies already... we should all compare our babies' birth weights when they pop out and see who managed to have the biggest! Grin
