When to tell work?

I am 12 wks + 4 and am inclined to just get on and tell work. I could probably get away with not saying anything for a couple of weeks more but wonder if there is any reason to tell work later rather than earlier.
I'm not sure how delighted they'll be given that I've only been back from mat leave for 4 mths but there's not a lot they can do about that really!
Any views on when to tell?

The best advice I can give you is tell them when you are ready to.

I am now 17+5 weeks and alot of people I work with still don't know that I am pregnant. But that is due to my history and is a personal choice.

You can only put it off for so long and I actually think it is easier if people do know. Also you will still be leaving at the same time whether you tell them now or in a few weeks time.

You have to tell them to qualify for Maternity Leave by, I think, 16 weeks till your EDD. Unless it's changed this year, as I think you now get 12 months SMP instead of the 6 months.

I didn't tell anyone till my booking in appointment with the midwife at 13 weeks.

when I was expecting DS1 i told them after the first scan, I have now been back for a year after maternity leave and told my boss yesterday I am PG again( I am coming up to 14weeks) I was going to wait till later but I am so tired & seem to be showing much earlier this time round that some of the people I work with had already guessed, I think the norm is to let the cat out of the bag after the first scan

tiger.direct.gov.uk/cgi-bin/maternity.cgi

a good government website to advise when you'll have to inform employers according to your EDD.

I think it's 52 weeks Maternity Leave, (26 weeks Ordinary & 26 weeks Additional) 39 weeks paid. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope Ambi - spot on:

  • 90% of sal for first 6 weeks
  • SMP for a further 33 weeks.

The Tiger web site is great.

Agree with the advice that says tell when you're ready. I had to tell early on because I was so ill, and my team were fab. Told my client group at about 13 weeks. Other people are only noticing now I'm the size of a house

Good luck!
