Okay, so I am 13 weeks pregnant, 14 weeks tomorrow, and I am perfectly aware that I am super skinny but no matter what I do I just don't seem to be gaining weight. I'm 7st 12lbs and am 5ft 4in so that leaves my BMI at 18.8 which is extremely low. I'm very worried that as a result of my low weight that it'll effect my baby. Does anyone know of anyone in my situation?? Has anyone been in my situation who has gone on to having a healthy baby??

Have a good chat with your midwife and/or GP. They will be able to advise.

As long as you’re eating well and taking in enough calories you should be fine. I’m not a mrs prof though!

Your midwife will probably say the bmi is over 18 so you're fine. They'd be right though, and it's too early to worry about putting on weight. I'm st a similar stage and have lost about 4kg so far which brings my bmi close to yours. It's fine, I'll start putting on weight soon but not majorly until the 2nd half.

Your in the healthy weight category for BMI, I've just double checked. I think as long as you eat healthily and often you will be fine. My friend has just had a healthy baby and she is very, very skinny but she does eat.

HalfStar · 22/11/2017 10:39

I think it's OK, honestly. My BMI was 18 when I was 18 weeks, midwife didn't really remark on it, just asked me how much weight I've put on with other pregnancies (this is dc3). Nobody has suggested it's a problem or suggested I'm too skinny. I'm 5'2 so I do really 'show' when I'm pregnant, I get a big bump. You probably will too by the end! And your hunger will ramp up as you go on.

I wrote about this on someone else thread recently; I'm 5'3 and 7st 8lbs. My BMI is under as well. When I saw my consultant he asked if I had an eating disorder, which I don't.

The consultant told me about a study on women in 3rd world countries who were severely underweight and undernourished who went on to have healthy babies of normal weight. Obviously you want to make sure you're eating and getting nutrients in your body but his point was that it takes a lot for it to impact your baby. As long as your eating, your baby will take what it needs.

Weight gain should happen naturally over the course of the pregnancy and mainly in the 3rd trimester, so I really wouldn't worry about it yet.

You will be absolutely fine and the baby will take what it needs.

If you're worried, start taking some pregnancy vitamins and then at least you know for sure the baby is getting all the nutrients they need.

I was the same with my first pregnancy - been painfully thin all my life and it never seemed to get better. When I was pregnant with DD I was about 7st, and am 5"3. They kept me under a consultant and I had a few extra scans, but that was also because of my PCOS.

Pregnancy was absolutely fine (usual issues, nothing to do with weight) and DD was born perfectly healthy, and a good weight. Still is now at 3.5! (I'm early pregnant with DC2 now and am a much healthier weight.)

Keep taking vitamins etc and I'm sure you'll be okay. Definitely chat with your midwife if you're worried, though.

Thank you everyone for your replies and reassurance!!! I definitely feel a lot better about it now!!! I always make sure I'm eating the right foods to get enough nutrients for the baby!!! I guess I should stop googling everything as it makes me worry too much😯😯

I was the same as you when I had my first child (who was a whopping 9lb11oz) so don’t worry. Your body will just likely just change a lot

boodles101 · 22/11/2017 13:51

Same height and weight here. I was very fortunate to have an easy pregnancy with very little symptoms, healthy 8lb 2 boy born at 41 weeks. He was bigger than I though he would be considering me and DH are small and slim!

KimmySchmidt1 · 22/11/2017 14:12

make sure you are actually eating 2,500 calories a day at least. be brutally honest with yourself about whether that is happening.

If you are eating those calories, I would not worry about what is happening to them in terms of fat on your body.

FozBoz · 22/11/2017 16:49

I had/have a BMI of 18 last pregnancy at booking . It dropped a bit because of morning sickness. As my pregnancy continued I ate normally and DS was born weighing 8lbs. He's now a stonking, sturdy kid who is very athletic.

I'm pregnant again and BMI is about the same. This baby seems to be developing well and I'm convinced he's bigger.

As long as you eat well, and that weight is normal for you and your midwife isn't worried I would relax about it.

Jupiter15 · 22/11/2017 18:46

My BMI was 17 at my booking appointment, it’s just my natural weight. I’m getting referred for extra scans but really not worried. 1st baby was a good size.
