Are underwired bras ok to wear still? I'm wearing a non wired bra at night for support... But what about in the day, is it still ok? Hmm

I wear my sleeping bra all the time now. Still some support but feels like there’s nothing on

ViserionTheDragon · 20/11/2017 01:12

The recommendation is to switch to a non wired bra as soon as you find out your pregnant. Apparently they interfere with milk ducts and make it difficult for your breath to produce milk. I'm glad I switched because my wired bras are now very uncomfortable!

teabagfreak · 20/11/2017 07:50

I’ve been wearing a wired bra as i don’t feel supported wearing non wired. I hope to breastfeed and now worried about this. 🤔

BigBaboonBum · 20/11/2017 08:58

@teabagfreak don’t worry about it, plenty of people use wired and still breastfeed. It’s not so much to do with preventing breastfeeding as it may block a duct and make you feel like shite... but they unblock. It’s just not pleasant

The guidance isn’t clear but I checked with my midwife, she said wear whatever feels comfortable. The NHS doesn’t appear to have an official view either way.

In the end I switched to non-wired around 30wks, but that was for comfort rather than anything else. I have pretty small boobs - still only 38B at full term so I’m not sure if that makes a difference.

TriJo · 20/11/2017 09:26

I wore properly fitting wired bras for all 41 weeks when I was pregnant with my son - no issues and we breastfed for 15 months. I'm 28 weeks with #2 and I alternate between my nursing bras and wired ones depending on what's clean!

TriJo · 20/11/2017 09:26

For what it's worth, I'm very busty (32HH-J at the moment) and feel more comfortable with the support.

EastDulwichWife · 20/11/2017 10:20

My boobs are killing me at night now so will have to go and buy a sleeping bra today. 12 weeks. During the day I'm still in wired ones but they're getting pretty snug so I'll have to reconsider these too...

Needadvicetoleave · 20/11/2017 11:20

As long as they fit well you can continue to wear underwired bras through your whole pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding. The big issue is getting them well fitting.

I changed sizes every few weeks, so just bought cheap primark and asda bras but always ensured they fitted well. .

I HATE non-underwired bras so never changed out of them.

Got good milk supply, never got mastitis and successfully breastfed until 22 months (and counting!).

ClaireBear1986 · 20/11/2017 14:15

I had to buy underwired maternity bras at about 10 weeks, as I couldn't even sleep due to the pain. Wore them during the day and at night.

I bought the ones from Mothercare, and I loved them. Felt really supported (32EE) and the pain vanished.

My Midwife told me to stop wearing wired bras at my 1st appointment, if I wanted to breastfeed.

TheEdgeOfGlory266 · 20/11/2017 17:13

I'm pretty big (38G) and I can usually only wear underwired bras but have up about 6 weeks ago because I was so uncomfortable. I got some maternity bras - not nursing - out of Mothercare and they're amazing. Same kind of support as underwired but much more comfort.
