At my booking appointment last week, the consulant went over my previous pregnancy notes, and has tested me for a few conditions that could have caused me to have preterm labours, but he also said that I should take 75mg of aspirin a day. The midwife said it had to be junior aspirin but when I went to tesco to get some they gave me normal aspirin that is 75mg per tablet, I asked if it was ok to take this one and she said that it is the one that thins the blood (which is what the consulant wants to achieve) Do you think its ok?

Yes i had to take 75 mg of aspirin a day throughout my second pregnancy. It will be fine.

belgo · 17/04/2007 13:30

So the consultant prescribed you 75 mg Aspirin a day and the pharmacist has given you 75mg aspirin tablets?

SparklyGothKat · 17/04/2007 13:30

phew, I was worried, the consultant thinks that my placenta (sp??) is thickening too soon and causing my preterm labours.

The consultant just said to buy aspirin but it had to be 75mg.

then that's fine. Juniour aspirin is just the name, it's the dose thatt's important

SparklyGothKat · 17/04/2007 13:32

but the midwife said it had to be junior aspirin, but I couldn;t get that,

I have sticky blood apparently they decided to test my blood for this with ds after I told them my mum had had a blood clot during her pregnancy with me. Unfortunately even though I told them the same thing with my first they didn't test me luckily she was fine but I mc in between dd and ds and this could probably have been resolved with me taking asprin.

belgo · 17/04/2007 13:44

75mg is the usual blood thinning dose, also used for people with a cardiac disease history.

Madigan · 17/04/2007 13:44

Sparklygothcat, the only reason the midwife said to get junior aspirin is becuase that is a 75mg dose. If you have "normal" aspiring which is also a 75mg dose, that it exactly the same thing - so don't worry! I am also on daily 75mg aspirin, and will remain on it until I am 32 weeks.

mears · 17/04/2007 13:45

Junior aspirin is just the same - 75mg. It is fine.

mears · 17/04/2007 13:45

Junior aspirin is just the same - 75mg. It is fine.

paulaplumpbottom · 17/04/2007 13:47

Why didgey would asprin have helped?

madmumNika · 17/04/2007 14:54

I am also on 75mg daily aspirin- the make doesn't matter just so long as it's 75mg. This is also incidentally the 'low' dose used by stoke victims or those with potential clotting issues- as aspirin at this dose thins the blood but doesn't have any other serious side-effects (& doesn't thin the blood too much!). You are likely to be prescribed it in pregnancy if you have 'sticky' blood- ie. blood which is slightly better at clotting than normal. This is fairly common and can cause miscarriages, or clots that can be dangerous for the mother or baby (e.g. in the lungs, deep vein thrombosis etc.) and can also lead to pre-eclampsia. I had severe PE in my last pregnancy (DS was delivered at 30 wks as a result) and although the clotting tests showed everything is fine they have put me on it right up to 36 weeks with this pregnancy anyhow, just to be sure...

A lot of women have very successful second (third etc.!) pregnancies with daily aspirin- hope you do too!

madmumNika · 17/04/2007 14:55

oops- not 'stoke' victims but 'stroke' victims!

madmumNika · 17/04/2007 14:59

Incidentally in case I have worried you, slightly 'sticky' blood is unlikely to ever cause you any problems in normal life (in fact being 'good' at clotting is beneficial if injured!) EXCEPT when pregnant- which is why most people are surprised to find out they have it... Due to the extra demand on the body and blood having to pass through the placenta etc. (not sure I fully understand it) pregnancy can result in clots that can cause problems in those susceptible- anyone with more medical knowledge please correct me if I'm wrong! but that's the way my consultant explained it.

RahRah1 · 17/04/2007 16:29

Hi SparklyGothKat...

I had a prem baby due to clotting and placenta issues (24 weeks old)... Although not pregnant again yet (trying) I have been told to take aspirin by my consultant as well (75mg) and then once pregnant to book an appointment and discuss a further treatment plan. (regular blood test, monitoring, possible other blood thinners)..

Has you consultant discussed with you any other help/monitoring in regards to your pregnancy? If you wanted it I would ask for additional consultant appointments and scans to ensure all was running to plan... does not harm having extra monitoring.

Best wishes and wishing you a healthy pregnancy. XX

SparklyGothKat · 17/04/2007 19:08

Rahrah, I have to have scans every 4 weeks, and have been tested for things that can cause preterm labour. Also have been told that at 28 weeks I will be admitted for steriod injections. The hospital are keeping a very close eye on me this time.

Thats really great that they have a clear plan. Sounds like you are in safe hands. I hope when I'm pregnant again they remember what was said... it takes me a while! Best of Luck and take care X

lissielou · 17/04/2007 21:20

no real advice, but glad that they are taking proper care of you now {{hug}} good luck hun!

I was prescribed 75mg Aspirin during my 2nd pg ? first one ended at 33 wks with a sb.

The doc at the time said that there isn?t really any difference in benefit between 75mg and the standard 300gm in the way of blood thinning (which is what the desired effect is here), but tests did find that it (obviously) took longer for the 300mg to work its way out of the system than the 75mg does?so, in short ? a higher dose during the course of a pg is not ?bad? or detrimental to the pg?just maybe means that you have to come off it slightly earlier which brings in its own issues?.]

BTW: at 10wks pg ? had a flight to Oz ok?d by doc and consultant BUT was advised to double my aspirin dose for 2 days before and after each flight?..make of that what you will..

oh, and it kept on taking my 75mg until the daqy before I had my CS (@34wks)
