subchorionic haematoma advice

So here goes..
Had on and off spotting for a few weeks with two big bleeds on separate occasions.

Did a pregnancy test on Sunday just gone just to rule out pregnancy- for it to come back positive.

Visited gp following day and advised of symptoms- again followed another positive test. Gp worked out I would be around 3-4 weeks roughly and suspected miscarriage. She rang through to GAU so they could scan me.

When arrived at GAU doctor advised me that my hormone levels were low so thinks I am at the end of a miscarriage- will scan anyway and won’t be able to see anything at 3-4 weeks anyway but will have to carry out bloods to monitor levels.

Went in for scan for the nurse to say ‘ow wow it’s a good job we did scan you’ there was a healthy heartbeat and a 9 WEEK.. yes 9 WEEK baby inside..

Was advised of a subchorionic haematoma. Hence the bleeding and was told that if I wanted to continue with pregnancy to re book scan for next week to monitor the size of it.

The problem I have is I feel I’ve been left in the dark and that was it. I do not know if there are any risks involved if I do continue with pregnancy. I already have a 1 year old so this has come as a shock anyway but obviously I wouldn’t want to put my own Health or baby at risk if there are major complications at risk.

Doctor advised at GAU would follow up with letter, which I received yesterday and have been anxiously waiting for but it’s very basic and just confirms pregnancy and states that there is a subchorionic haematoma.

I have tried to do my own research and just come to a stop. There is no NHS guidelines that I can find. I feel so in the dark.

My first pregnancy went smoothly so I’m new
To all this.

Is there anything I should be doing/ not doing?

Any advice / Info is appreciated.

Hi OP, I’ve had 2 SCH’s - one at 6 weeks and another at 13 weeks (had a gush of blood then spotted for a week then another gush at 14 weeks. Spotted for 2 weeks). Mine were quite small though.

For my 6 week one I was just told to take it easy. They could only see the heartbeat and fetal pole at the time.

For my 13 week one I was told to go on pelvic rest until my 20 week scan. So no heavy lifting, exercise, sex. My work let me work from home for a month so although I wasn’t on bed rest (not recommended these days) I had my feet up and on the sofa a lot! I had a consultant appointment (am high risk due to IVF) at 15 weeks and he said it was wise for me to take advantage of the offer of working from home.

Hope that helps a bit! Would put yourself on pelvic rest for now and take it easy until you see them again and ask then!

Forgot to say my SCH’s resolved themselves but I guess it depends how big they are? I was warned I might have more bleeding.

Hi OP, I was also recently diagnosed with SCH. Have had 3 bleeds, and been spotting every day. My first bleed was at 14weeks and I'm now 18weeks. Overall the Drs seem pretty positive. Baby is growing well, heartbeat strong etc. and those are the factors they're watching.

I also struggled to find much advice online. The best I got was from reading the mumsnet archives. There's quite a few good threads, usually I think they refer to it as sub chorionic haemorrhage rather than haematoma.

I have been told to take it easy and take a few weeks off work to recover from most recent bleeds (I had 2 close together). I was told no need to bed rest, just to take it easy. I have also been put on some pretty heavy duty iron supplements. Dr said it's so that I'm better able to cope with any future blood loss.

I'm having this baby under private healthcare as currently living abroad, so it's quite a different system from what I experienced with NHS. Have had like a billion scans already, and that was even before the SCH!

Ive just been diagnosed with a small sch this week myself after going for a private scan - my gp and midwife told me just to wait and see regarding bleeding but i was too worried to wait!

The consultant told me that i might get more bleeding but it should resolve itself and for me not to worry about it at all.

So like you im a bit in the dark. Ive had a look online and a lot of people do seem to be told to avoid certain things and rest but i wasnt given this advice so am just carrying on as normal. Maybe it depends on how big it is?
