Maternity clothes that DON'T cling?

I've finally given in. My pre-bump clothes are just too uncomfortable, even with buttons undone and hidden by a belly band. I need to buy some maternity clothes.

However, I cannot find ANYTHING that looks nice on me except for a couple of loose cardigans. Is all maternity wear made of clingy jersey fabric? I'm a size 18 normally so admit I have a fairly sizeable rump and enormous boobs, but surely it shouldn't be this hard to find clothes that don't make me look like I'm smuggling a litter of puppies up my tshirt?

If anyone can give me any suggestions of places to try shopping, I would be hugely grateful. I need a few workwear friendly options ideally, sadly I can't get away with leggings in the office.

H&M do a good range of maternity clothes. I do agree that materials are clingy and stretchy sometimes. You can try tunic tops.

I got some flowy/tunic type tops from Evans (not maternity range) which work well. Dorothy Perkins have some workwear in their maternity range which is more flowy than clingy too.

I've bought three dresses and a really comfy pair of jeans from jojomamanbebe and feel much more confident in them than anything else I've tried on. They aren't tight all over, give you a nice bit of under boob shape and drape generously over bump and my pre existing wobbly bits. It's a bit pricey, but they often have a discount if you buy two of something plus Black Friday is coming up.

Size 14 with big boobs and giant bottom.

Thank you all! I've found one pair of jeans from jojo which have been a godsend but haven't had much luck with their dresses. Shall have to look again! And thanks for the tip on Evans too.

I really wish there were better options out there than the clingy stripy stuff!! If I wouldn't buy clingy when not pregnant why would I suddenly want everything ruched around the bump?! Try Asos for jeans etc and boohoo.com for some very cheap items, there's a decent range of options. I mainly just get the next size up in normal clothes 👍

I've had the same problem at a size 14. Everything just looked awful; really unflattering. I ended up buying 3 dresses from Isabella Oliver which were quite pricey but I have had good cost per wear (I'm lucky to be onto a second pregnancy so have already worn each dress once a week for about 10 months in total...and counting!). I don't understand why all the maternity clothes are so clingy!

Blouse type styles work better than the stretchy materials which cling

New Look maternity tops don't seem too bad & The Essential One dresses are pretty good, quite skater-ish in shape. ASOS can be hit & miss but their maternity wrap dresses don't cling in the wrong places & are suitable for nursing if you choose to breastfeed.

Vertbaudet has nice stuff which is more flowy than clingy iyswim.

Is this what you have in mind when you say non-clingy? 😂

TBH, I’d have loved being pregnant in the 80’s - just for being able to get away with wearing comfortable tents like this every day.

I got a nice shirt dress (with belt so not just a tent) in topshop. It’s not clingy but sits well over my bump and I’d probably wear it even if I wasn’t pregnant. Is that the kind of thing you’re looking for?

Crabbo · 16/11/2017 21:08

I guess it’s so it stretches with you and fits all the way through, plus they need to accommodate for people being the same size but with different shapes and sizes of bump. H&M do good trousers and jeans though and I got some nice linen mix tshirts from ASOS.

Seraphine are worth a look, their dresses are quite heavy jersey and don't cling.

CoffeeAndCupcakes85 · 17/11/2017 13:43

CAAKE - that's amazing. That's exactly what I need Grin.

Hah coffee. Just google “Princess Diana pregnant” and you get picture after picture of polka-dotty, tenty, pregnant comfortableness.
