36 week scan sudden unexpected abnormality

Hi, it's just after midnight and my wife is really upset. She's in bits. We has a 36 week scan today to check the position of a low lying placenta, we expected it not to have moved and it hadn't. Not a problem, we were prepared for the possibility of a c-section. The sonographer mentioned something about the baby being a little on the short side, but it was a passing comment that we didn't take much notice of at the time, because all of the measurements on the two previous scans had been within the normal percentile and neither the sonographer or the midwife made anything of it in the post scan consultation. Unfortunately it prompted my wife to have a closer look at the scan results in her file before going to bed. She said she'd had a terrible feeling. It showed that the femur length at 36 weeks, today, was 57mm, but on the previous 32 week scan it had been 61mm. That is in itself very strange. But also; the head circumference was now on the upper scale of normal as was the abdominal circumference. We read that these three factors combined could be a sign of dwarfism. None of this makes sense and we can't understand why none of the one-to-one midwife team or the sonographer hadn't flagged anything up at the time of the scan. I think that I should point out that we are practical people and will love our baby no matter what the outcome. I can only assume that the scan that we had today was in someway inaccurate and that's what I've told my wife, How else could the femur length have shortened???? I've promised that we'll go for another scan tomorrow morning, privately if necessary, but I doubt if either of us will sleep well tonight. Has anybody else come across a situation like this? The more I dwell on it, the less sense any of it makes, but it doesn't do anything to reduce my wife's anxiety.

Hello everyone and thank you for your comments,
we had a new scan today, we paid privately but at an NHS hospital; Liverpool Women's, they were great....
Turns out that yesterdays scan results were a total load of rubbish and in fact the position of the posterior placenta, which was scanned today using a trans-vaginal scan, now shows that there is no risk of placenta previa and my wife can have a perfectly natural birth, a c-section is now unnecessary . If the consultant had based his clinical decision on yesterdays scan, my wife would be have been booked in for surgery and all of the associated risks and potential for complications.

Mistakes like these are, I'm sure, not common, but if there's a lesson here, it's take responsibility for understanding what's happening to you and if you have a bad feeling about something, don't ignore it.

Thanks again

OMG I'm glad it's all well in the end. But how stressful after that awful scan yesterday!

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 15/11/2017 20:15

Really good news. Isn't it awful to think what would have happened if you had been less vigilant?

I think it's exactly stories like this that, unfortunately, cause people massive anxiety during pregnancy because they don't feel they can trust their results, their doctor, their midwife, their sonographer...

I'm so pleased! Congratulations.
I was thinking about you at 5 am this morning when my daughter decided to start vominting and get the runs! Delightful!

You highlighted something I had written to disagree. Luckily the OP chose to have another scan which has now allayed all of their fears. Why you would advise somebody not to do this is beyond me. And as for saying stress does not affect the baby- utter bollocks. It's really silly to say things like you did. Stress can certainly affect a baby and to just make random statements like that could actually be dangerous. Luckily the OP and wife are medical professionals and knew what they needed to do.

My ds was a shrinking baby. I had pre eclampsia from 32 weeks so was scanned on a weekly baby. One scan showed ds smaller than the previous week. I was dent up to Kings for a dopler (think it was)
He was fine, now 22 and 6ft tall.

Excellent news OP , hope you and your wife get a better nights sleep tonight .

So happy to hear the good news. I found Liverpool women's to be much better than anywhere else in the NW when I was speaking with different hospitals 6 years ago. It was up in the air if we would be relocating back to the NW and I was 5 months into my first pregnancy already having problems.

When it comes to health I am a firm believer in always going back to ask those questions if in doubt.

Mrstobe90 · 15/11/2017 23:53

Glad to hear that everything is ok!
I’m with one to one midwives as well (Wirral) and other than being slightly disorganised, I’ve mostly found them quite good. Will definitely take more notice of the scans now though!

eeanne · 16/11/2017 01:07

Glad to hear you got the clarity you needed! I definitely always recommend as long as resources allow to get a second opinion when you have concerns.

I find it odd how many people decided your wife was suffering from an anxiety disorder Hmm Some things are worth worrying about, and as you discovered, someone who mis-measures a femur and head circumference may have made other more serious mistakes as well.

Want2bSupermum · 16/11/2017 03:03

Eeanne - anxiety during pregnancy is extremely common. Also, sometimes, as was in my case, the anxiety is your sixth sense indicating that something isn't quite right. The OPs wife felt like something was off. She was anxious about this. Doesn't mean she is suffering from anxiety.

eeanne · 16/11/2017 03:16

Want2bSupermum I was talking about the comments from TerrifyingFeistyCupcake and PersianCatLady who recommended against an additional scan because the wife probably was suffering from prenatal anxiety. Which was horrible advice in this case.

I think it's absurd to suggest that someone who receives a scan result that is inconsistent with previous ones and gets worried about it, is in the midst of a mental health episode. There is too much armchair MH diagnosis on MN.

Want2bSupermum · 16/11/2017 03:28

Ahhh thanks for clarifying. Smile

I’ve heard so many stories about scans being inaccurate for sizing and weight. I had gestational diabetics and so I had extra scans and check ups. I was on a social media group with women also diagnosed with GD (the concern is GD babies are bigger and so mothers are frequently induced early as a result of this). So many women, in their birth storuesband announcements would say how it was predicted their baby was big at xx scale, but was born average or small. It was quite common and GD mothers tended to be obsessed with babies sizing.

I agree that you need to take further advice, because a seed has been planted in your mind and you need to find answers. Go for a private scan but also seek advice from your midwife and she can interpret the results and refer if necessary or as a precaution or at your request.

At least if you find out either way, you will know. As you say, you will love the baby regardless, but if there is a condition then at least you can mentally prepare for it and read up before birth.
Regardless of your love for your baby, no matter what anyone says, we all wish and hope for a perfectly healthy and average baby. Any deviation from that dream can be heartbreaking but it’s just a matter of time to get your heads around it.

For some reason the comments didn’t all load when I sent my first response, but now they have I can see that you have since had a scan and everything is good. Glad to hear it and thanks for the update. (Ignore my waffle!!)
