Hi

I have had a growth scan today after being frightened to death last week by a doctor who put in my notes (with no explanation or discussion) that my baby was 'small for date'.

I have severe Crohns Disease and have continued taking my medication throughout pregnancy as it is well under control with the meds and the risk of me becoming very ill without the medication is high.

Anyway the main concern re the medication I am on is that there have been reports of small babies/growth issues and I have therefore been monitored throughout the pregnancy. I have not had any problems and have been very healthy throughout.

However following my hospital appointment last week I have been worrying about the above following the doctors' commemnts in my notes re the baby being small. I was therefore surprised and very pleased to be told at my scan today that my babys' estimated weight is currently 7 and a half pounds - and I am only just over 37 weeks!!

Although I am obviously really relieved and pleased that all is well I am now fretting about how much she is going to weigh when I actually give birth and whether it will be more painful if she is big!???

This is my first baby and any help from any other mums re birth weight/pain ratio would be gratefully received...

Gravity is a great force, and the more weight the baby has got behind it, the better - well that is the opinion of my mum!!

My two were over 10lbs! DS1 was bad, but that was because he was posterior. DS2 was a doddle, no problem at all. Like others have said, it's quite hard to predict birth weight by scan. They predicted DS2 would be 8lbs after growth scan!! Good luck.

The babies position when you go into labour and the length of labour (i.e. how much energy you have left) are more important than size - IMO.....

Ds2 was 8lb 2 and posterior and while it was the most painful (due to his position I think) I didn't tear and it was a fast labour.

Ds was 9lbs 2oz and was also posterior, making it quite painful.
I also had a growth scan at 35 weeks and was told the baby was already 7lbs 3oz,which I'm hoping they've got wrong.I'm due next week and have convinced myself that this one is going to be over 10lbs.

My 3rd was the biggest at 10lb, was induced 2 weeks early because of it-the actual contractions were painful but that was down to being induced early, the actual pushing part took 6 mins and that was me holding back as the midwife wasn't ready! just a couple of grazes.the other 2 (lighter) were harder work when it came to the pushing. My 4th baby was predicted to be bigger than the 10lb er from a scan, so i was induced at 40 weeks, he turned out to be only 8lb 5ozs, so they do get it wrong sometimes. Like others have said, it all depends on the position of the baby more than anything.x
