So distressed..accidental exposure to insecticide

5 and half weeks pregnant
Already worried as some brown spotting
Now found that a bag that had some insecticide moth treatment in had leaked and left damp patch. Liquid insecticide in carrier bag where had leaked, DP saw and thinks around 100 ml. Bag must have had hole in as had soaked area around enough that the colours on carrier bag had run. We had carpet protector film down and a dust sheet from moving house a couple of months ago, because we still had pile of boxes there.
I was meant to get rid of the stuff but forgot to ring manufacturer for advice on disposal. Was mover opened, don't know how it leaked.
Designed to damage nervous system and kill insects that way. Google results suggest v bad to be exposed esp in first trimester.
I am 40 and this is a much tried for first child.
So distraught

Would breathing be getting it 'in' the body though....I have stopped googling but when I did there was a study about damage through ambient air

But you didn't breathe it in. It was a liquid soaked into something under a layer.

If at all possible try and stop yourself going down the rabbit hole.

May or may not help to write down a column of what your freaking out about and then column next to with the facts against that. Confirm with the authorities tomorrow. Decide what you need to throw out to make yourself feel comfortable.

Then get on with worrying about how to avoid soft cheese!

itshappening · 12/11/2017 21:45

Ha, yes! The days of worrying about soft cheese seem like a happy memory now!

I am going to get DPS to check the full product name so I can call for advice tomorrow as you suggest. He saw it was active ingredient cypermethrine but I think I should get the product name.

Thanks so much to you all for helping me out! I needed MN!

DP! Not DPS

Bless you. Honestly, I totally understand why you're freaked. But there really is no need to be.

Ermm · 12/11/2017 21:50

Yeah - get the product name. Call the company. They'll roll their eyes at you and say literally NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT CRAZY PREGNANT LADY. Sorted.

onemoremummy · 12/11/2017 21:53

OP, maybe if you had a massive bucket of insecticide in the room, like litres of the stuff just lying there, and you slept in that room every night, then maybe yes you should call someone for advice. But 100ml is nothing, even if a little bit evaporated it wasn’t even your bedroom!!! You’ll be fine, you’ll do more damage to your baby by worrying than by having breathed in that air. I live in London - think of all the cancer inducing, Alzheimer’s causing pollutants me and my babies were exposed to when I was pregnant, and they’re fine (I think 😬). Our bodies protect our babies really well. Please don’t worry.

itshappening · 12/11/2017 21:58

Thank you onemore

I live in London too Wink

I'm a midwife and I'm nearly 100% sure you will be fine. Obviously I don't have an encyclopaedic know.edge of every insecticide but you haven't breathed fumes in, you haventbdrunk it, you haven't got it on your skin. Just having it sat there won't have got vapour into the air.

Chanandler · 12/11/2017 22:17

Honestly, you're fine and so is that tiny baby. But you know that gut wrenching sick feeling that you've screwed up? Welcome to parenthood 😊 you're going to love it!

bettydraper31 · 12/11/2017 22:46

I'm sure the amount of exposure needed to harm your baby would be huge, not just walking past the spare room. I'm sure you'll be fine xx

mehhh · 12/11/2017 22:48

Maybe just speak to midwife if you're really worried etc or the 101 number, main thing really is to not panic and try relax xxx
