Can anyone talk to me about post birth pain relief when you can't have Ibuprofen or other similar drugs?

I'm probably going to have a caesarean for my birth as I did last time. I can't take any ibuprofen (non steroidal) drugs because of gastric ulcers so I'm a bit worried about what I can have after. I had morphine in hospital last time and went home with paracetamol and ibuprofen. I'm terrified about going home on just paracetamol this time Shock.

I believe codeine used to be considered safe but then there was a baby that died from a morphine overdose due to the mother taking codeine. Risk is tiny but obviously not worth it!

I had Tramadol after both of my sections and was given some to take home too.

Spam88 When was that? Just wondering as I was prescribed codeine and breastfeeding not that long ago...

PregnantBridesmaid · 04/11/2017 21:20

Yes, new MHRA guidance. Codeine not safe for children. Codeine basically works because it is metabolised to morphine but the rate at which this happens varies from person to person. So if are a "fast metaboliser" then this could cause toxicity. There were a series of child deaths in the US.

lorelai no idea sorry, I just know it was before my DD was born but that was only 5 months ago.**

ZepellinBend · 04/11/2017 21:24

Ah yes I remember reading about that not so long ago in a science magazine about adults. Some people carry genes that means they either metabolise codeine quickly or on the other hand slowly so it doesn't work at all.

The advice has changed within the last couple of years.

Dozer · 05/11/2017 13:23

That’s so sad about the deaths.

RedBlackberries · 05/11/2017 13:49

It is Sad. Not worth the risk so hopefully I can do with paracetamol.

Tramadol, then co-codamol then paracetamol. Good luck
