Raniditine vs omeprazole

Hi. Sorry for long post. I'm wondering if anyone could help please. I'm 34 weeks pregnant and I've been really suffering with indigestion/acid reflux. I have been given gaviscon advance to take 4 times a day as well as ranitidine twice a day. It started off being 3 times a day but after a week or so this was brought down to twice a day. Ive been back to the doctors today and they have given me omeprazole to try. Im scared of trying it due to side effects. I haven't had any on ranitidine and I'm terrified of being poorly with stomach issues outside my house! The pain is so bad that I'm scared to eat anything. When I was last in hospital with it, they said it was because I'm not eating and drinking enough so trying to have a bit more during day but I'm now stuck about what to actually eat! I'm having very plain food.. teatime it's between pork, gammon and sausages. Pretty boring. I have a sweet tooth and have given up chocolate as believe that is pretty bad for acid reflux. Is there anything that you can recommend instead of this.. in terms of snacks and something sweet? I'm getting really miserable about it all as the food i am eating is so bland! Please can anyone help?! Thank you x

So no I wouldn’t be taking it if pregnant if it was me.

I’ve been on omeprazole (and now Lanzoprazole) since I was about 20 weeks gone. DD is now 12!

In my case they think the ridiculous amount of acid reflux in pregnancy caused a hiatus hernia, so I’ll never be ‘cured’ but the Lanzop controls it. As long as I’m taking it (15mg every morning) I can eat and drink what I want. But miss one dose and I’m in bits.

I actually had about 6 months acid free without it after I’d had DD, but it came back with a vengeance and I got the diagnosis of HH. I couldn’t live without it now.

Thank you. I think from what I've read then that I'm best starting it in the morning. Will stick to ranitidine tonight then start the new ones tomorrow!

Salene there are problems with long term use of omep and absorbtion of nutrients- so anemia is a serious risk if not addressed and other nutruent depletion. However, as an adult, i chugg loads of fereglobin plus liquid and take natural magnesium supplements ontop of eating really well. That's much harder to be sure of with fussy toddlers but if still nursing then milk would adapt to give more nutrients as needed and/or add vitimins in liquid form into other drinks or foods and it should cover enough bases (natural vitimin supplements are better but not sure if there are any kids can take). If acid becomes so bad they refuse foods or bring most up then they don't get enough nutrients anyways so it's risk either way and about managing the risks.
