My last baby was OP and delivered OP - have followed all the advice given re leaning forward, leaning on ball, left side etc and and know about positions in labour - went to be checked over this morning and he is OP - wondered whether anyone knew of any possible sure fire way of getting him to turn NOW! or over the next week as would quite like him to stay put til next friday now!

The only thing I can think of is taking up praying...

Am being a bit thick here, whats OP? Is it Breech? Sorry.

serenity · 15/04/2007 11:38

Obviously I don't know what your last OP delivery was like, but all three of mine were OP and it was fine. Just make sure you keep active, don't lie flat on the bed as that bloody hurts - squatting, on all fours, standing etc takeds the pressure off your back and makes it a lot easier.

Unfortunately I've got to rush off of MN atm, but if you do a search you will find that there are loads of threads about OP labours and births, and a lot of them are quite positive. Good luck!

OP - occiput posterior. otherwise known as back to back

baby's back against mum;s back , rather than to her front

Octo- it might be that that is how you carry. if baby doesn;t want to turn, have a look at this which can help to turn a baby in labour

spinning babies

and if baby is OP when you labour, don;t lie on your back ! upright, mobile , active ...

DD turned when i was in labour, and then came very quick ! OP is not the end of the world, if baby stays OP, you can still deliver him !

FlossALump · 15/04/2007 11:54

DS was back to back, and like LM he turned in labour I think. I was just advised to crawl and sit on a chair with the back in between my legs. Didn't do it though as this was only a day or so (maybe even the same day as) as I had DS.

Thanks ladies - ds2 came out OP so know it is possible - just remember how painful it was!!! Won't be long now ...

Do OP babies come late? I am ROA-P at 41+ weeks and I am wondering if it is not coming out because of it's position.
I spend my days on my knees now but i think baby is too big to move anywhere.
DO they really turn with contructions.

Please help, rather scared about the prospect of being induced and having an OP baby at the same time.

Jossiejump · 09/06/2007 09:50

Both my boys were OP, DS2 was induced at 39 weeks as I was GBS with leaking waters. Don't know ifthey are more painful as that is all I have had, just know that I have had all of my contractions in my back. Don't worry too much about it, I'm pg and due in November, am resigned tyo probably bein OP again, doesn't worry me. My friend was worried because her number 3 baby was OP, everyone worried her about it, in the end she had 1hr labour and gave birth at home!

greenbug · 09/06/2007 10:33

This is good to know, as I have made myself into a total panic state. did you do anything special to eliviate the pain in the back? did you deliver on all fours (this is waht i was reading on the internet)? did you have an epidural?

flightattendant · 09/06/2007 14:25

DS was OP till a couple of weeks ago and I did some yoga type stuff on all fours, also cleaned the floors same position, I think these actually did work...not a guarantee but I'm thinking of you and sending spinning vibes!! {{{{{turn, baby, turn!}}}}}

lulumama · 09/06/2007 14:26

my OP baby turned in labour

it can make labour stop and start for a while as there is not equal pressure on the cervix, and might be slower to dilate, but keep going with the OFP !

twoplusone · 09/06/2007 15:38

my op baby turned 30mins before delivery then shot out!! (3 pushes...

Good luck#

SockPuppetOfDoom · 09/06/2007 15:51

You may think I'm crazy, but this is something I've been told is guaranteed to turn an OP baby (in labour)...

It's called the Pancake Flip:

2 contractions on left side
2 on right side
2 on hands and knees
2 in open knee-chest (ie. on hands and knees and then lower head and chest to floor - helps if you are supported by a beanbag or similar)

Apparently, according to my lecture notes, 'rarely is more than two cycles of this needed to turn a posterior baby'! Hey, you never know

If nothing else, stay upright, mobile and use hands/knees position to alleviate back pain.

lulumama · 09/06/2007 15:53

yes, that is also recommended on www.spinningbabies.com

SockPuppetOfDoom · 09/06/2007 15:54

Doh. Have never been able to access that site for some reason, lulu. I don't think my 'puter likes it...

lulumama · 09/06/2007 15:56

it is quite useful....why are you a sock puppet of doom, dare i ask??

SockPuppetOfDoom · 09/06/2007 16:11

Oh, I dunno, fancied a change - and all this revision is making me feel quite doom-y

lulumama · 09/06/2007 16:19

okey doke

ProjectIcarus · 09/06/2007 16:26

both mine op first not so good, the second I was ready for!

I stayed on my feet or on my ball for my whole labour. at one point my contractions stopped they were pretty much continuous at this point.

I felt the baby rotating (clockwise) and descending into the birth canal. It was really odd quite intense but not sore just odd.

Transition next then 8 mins and out she came!

i had tried all the ofp stuff but it made no diff. Suspect my body just suits op shape.

Tens machine and walking about. Sitting down lying down made it v v sore in back.

greenbug · 09/06/2007 21:01

I just logged in to find all your lovely messages!!! thank you ladies! I'll definitely try the advice at labour, Sockpuppet, and will continue with watching telly on my fours....

One more question, I am 6 days overdue now... is this because of baby being OP? were you all late with yours?

stleger · 09/06/2007 21:48

My 2 and 3 turned in labour - all 3 kids overdue. Maybe no1 had made a turning space? I was home and walking as long as poss. with 2 and 3. Good luck!

Jossiejump · 09/06/2007 22:00

Greenbug, I couldn't give birth on all fours, as was hooked up to drips for GBS etc, used Tens though, then progressed to Meptid and eventually epidural
