Just found out that I am pregnant (5 weeks today) and I am just recovering from a nasty bug. Had d and v for past 2 days - and really bad stomach cramps - dh and dd1 had it as well - could this harm my baby do you think? really worried!! Been to doctors and he wasn't very helpful at all!

If it´s the v&d bug (gastroenteritis), it cannot harm the baby, don´t worry. I also had it when 15 weeks pg - your doctor should have been more helpful!

I had a terrible tummy bug early in this pregnancy, I was really sick and that's totally unlike me. Everything was fine with the baby though! I don't blame you for being worried, but I'm sure it's fine. Keep hydrated, I found drinking flat fat coke really helpful (bit of sugar makes you feel so much better) and once you can face it, a bit of dry toast or something equally plain. Hope you get better soon x

Thanks u2 - feel like crap - was v sick at beginning of last pregnancy but otherwise v healthy and didn't get any bugs etc.. sure it's just a 2 day thing - just had phonecall from my m-in-law and she started today with it!

I did read somewhere (poss even here) that your immunity is reduced in early pregnancy to stop your body rejecting the baby, so these things must be pretty common. I'd see your GP if you're not showing any signs of improvement over the weekend. Good luck x

MrsMar - that would make sense as I know people who had it twice in one pg .
madbet - last time I spent a week and a half worrying about getting the dreaded bug as my DD and DH had it that much before me. Unfortunately, there is not a lot we can do about getting it over and over again, but you can sort of protect your newborn against the rotavirus gastroenteritis (one of the most common in infants and young children in Britain) by giving him/her the Rotarix vaccine. This is a two-dose oral vaccine that has to be administered by the age of 6 months. Ask your GP about it...I´ve already ordered a course for my new unborn baby...

Hey there Madbet! I've literally just gotten over the worst tummy bug I've ever had. Had cramps for three days solid before I had any diahorrea. The cramps were so bad that on 3rd day I wanted DP to take me to A & E but went to doc instead. As with you doc was really unhelpful so after 4th day when Diahorrea started I phoned the number the midwives gave me at the hospital labour ward. The midwife I spoke to was MUCH more helpful and reassuring! She said that if its an infection in yourself (bug) it wont transfer and baby will be fine so don't panic honest it will be fine.

madbet · 14/04/2007 08:14

But how do you know what type of infection it is? Still don't feel right this morning - managing to eat stuff now though and no d and v but tummy cramps still there. DD not been Ok for few weeks now but she teething as well so keep putting her symptoms down to that!

Hi again,

Doctor just told me it was a virus! I think thats their favourite thing to say when they dont have the time to find out whats actually wrong with you!
