Hi all, will any of you mums to be, be getting the flu vaccine? I've never had the vaccine before, and also never had the flu.
Heard it makes some people poorly (even though I know it's not a live vaccine) what are your thoughts? My midwife wasn't very helpful and just said it's up to me.

Neither are live vaccines. I had both on same day, barely felt the flu vaccine. No side effects at all. Worked with a woman who had whooping cough (she was working away and poor woman took ages to get diagnosed, walk in doctor diagnosed a cough). It was brutal and took her a long time to recover. Would not want to experience myself or put a baby through it.

I will definitely be getting both vaccines :)

I've had both. No side effects whatsoever from either. My thinking was that the people making the recommendations know a hell of a lot more about the science, risks and benefits than I do, so it makes no sense for me to go against the recommendation.

I had flu jab it was fine. I had a red swollen mark come up the next day for a few days but that was it.
I'm booking whopping one next week.

When I was finally diagnosed with whooping cough last year (which was a struggle - I was misdiagnosed twice before insisting on a blood test and being diagnosed with WC, by which point it was too late to help with antibiotics) I was told by the nurse at the Whittington hospital that it is far, far more prevalent than people realise. So many people are misdiagnosed. And it kills babies. It’s bad enough being an adult. But it makes me quite angry that some people don’t protect their babies by getting the shot in the third trimester. I just think it is a no brainier. Sorry - know that is a controversial point of view but the whole anti vax thing, particularly when it is an adult not child getting the vaccination and it isn’t a live vaccination, makes my blood boil.

Please have the whooping cough at the least.
A friends baby caught whooping cough at 3 weeks old, he was seriously ill and in hospital for weeks, he almost didn't make it, and he still has health problems many years later.

Just reading this again and wondering ... I was advised from 20 weeks-everyone else seems to be from 28 ?

Oldschool41 · 21/10/2017 09:01

I had both but a few days later ended up with a nasty cold and chest infection but I don not think it was related to the flu jab I was 28 weeks when I had mine

Last pregnancy (2014/15) I got the flu vaccine and it floored me! I used to get it every year for asthma too.. never had one since.
Got my flu jab last week (11weeks) and I'm totally fine and glad I got it!

NoParticularPattern · 21/10/2017 09:10

@missingmilestones I’m just thinking the same! I had both flu and whooping cough jabs at 21 weeks as midwife booked them for me! She said any time from 20 weeks to me and the nurse who did them asked me how many weeks I was and didn’t bat an eyelid when I said 21! Maybe different CCGs have different guidelines?! Anyway I’ve had both now so not a lot I can do about it other than have another if I needed to wait until 28 weeks onwards!

Missingmilestones · 21/10/2017 09:13

Odd isn’t it perhaps they are just changing the advice generally but some areas are rolling it out sooner than others ?
I wondered if it might have been due to the fact I’m schedulers in for cs at 36 weeks but they had posters up last time I went saying from 20 weeks ...might ask next week

Gunpowder · 21/10/2017 09:35

RCOG now recommend whooping cough vaccine from 16-32 weeks. I’m having twins and was told the earlier the better.

TonicAndTonic · 21/10/2017 09:39

I was told 20 weeks onwards for the whooping cough vaccine as well. Interesting that it does seem to vary a bit!

Hazandduck · 21/10/2017 09:41

Another person who had both and was fine. Had WC one after my 20 week scan, and flu at 34 weeks. My arm wasn’t even that bad, but a sore arm is nothing compared to the benefits. Real, actual flu is absolutely horrendous.
