induction

Hi
Is there any way that i can get my midwife to agree to an induction for purely practical reasons? I have been induced with all of my other 3 and the thought of a rush to hospital terrifies me.
We are about 15 minutes from the hospital (without traffic) and we do not have a car at the moment, so we need to arrange transportation. We also have 3 older ones to arrange childcare for and i am VERY fussy about who i will allow to look after them an it should be my parents, but they are going away 4 days after due date - so i am also panicking about that - although nobody else seems to think this is a huge problem.
On top of that my last labour was all of 2 hours long.
I really dont want a home birth if i can avoid it - but how on earth can i get my mw to agree to this.
I am 22 weeks, and bb due in August, i think this seems to be quite a busy tiem for hospitals anyway!
Am i fussing over nothing - this wakes me up in themiddle of the night adn everyone thinks i am crazy - it wil all ;work itself out' apparently!
Dh is very anti - cars (science - grrr) but has agreed we can get one if 4 kids and no car turns out to be too much - but will not cocnsider it until next year.

HELP

love Clara

I think it's worth explaining your concerns to your midwife, and that it is stressing you out. That way you will know if this is a possibility or not, and I think its better to be prepared rather than 'it'll work itself out'.

I guess your midwife may say that you can always take a taxi to the hospital, and that you really do need a contingency plan for childcare if parents are away.

But at lea t then you'll know her views on what is possible. Good luck.

I think all the different hospitals have different guildlines for this don't they...over here they don't like inducing unless it's for a medical reason...why were you induced with your other 3?

some hospitals induce on social grounds, eg if dp is in the military etc but not sure what else that covers.

hi twinmummy - i was induced with my 2 girls for being 11 days late adn with my son because my water broke and 3 days later there were still no contractions. I have a feeling that i will not go 11 days over this time as they put my dates back at the 12 week scan.
I just dont understand how dh is not the least bit worried about it (pretty much refuses to discuss it!!)

Thanks for advice everyone. Has anyone else managed to persuade the hospital to induce for non medical reasons?

the same reasons i was induced wth some of mine....perhaps then with your mum not being around and no-one able to have the kids i think that is a valid enough reason......i think its likely you will go over dates again.discuss it with your midwife.x

Can you line up a friendly neighbour or someone close by with a car to be on call.

Failing that, and this might sound a bit excessive, but if you're that worried why don't you consider hiring a car for around your due date? No idea how much that would cost and it may be ridiculous but just a thought...

lulumama · 11/04/2007 16:53

agree re the hiring a car

if your last labour was so quick, that is a more valid reason for induction than organising child care, as you are more likely to end up delivering at home or on the way to hospital if you have precipitous labour, no car and no child care !

mush4brains · 11/04/2007 17:37

My neighbour was booked in for an induction as her 1st labour was so quick but that was going back a long while.Has your mw said anything about the speed of your labour being a potential problem where you cant get to the hospital on time?

mush4brains · 11/04/2007 17:38

Oh meant to say, you could ring an ambulance if you get caught short, I know this doesnt help with childcare.
