Travelling with a 7 week old baby am I mad!

Hi I booked a 2 week holiday for next august to lanzarote and have since found out I'm expecting our 3rd baby. If all goes to plan the baby will be 7 weeks when we fly. OH says we should cancel the holiday and just take the loss on the money we have paid. But I'm not sure. My other worry is getting a passport turned around in that time.
Has anyone got any advice on the travelling with a newborn and if you have had to get a newborn passport. Thanks

Other than the potential difficulty in getting a passport sorted in that time, I don't really see the problem. You're not going to some remote, far flung area. It'll take some organisation with regard to the equipment you'll need to take, but other than that I think newborns are much easier to travel with than toddlers.

You have children already so you know what looking after a newborn is like. Personally I wouldn't want to go on holiday with a 7 week old, seems like too much effort to me, but others would probably be fine and would enjoy it.

I would prefer to give the baby its first set of vaccinations before going on a plane, but as PPs said you're hardly going to an exotic destination, and it will probably be fine.

All depends how chilled out you are I think.

Is the holiday 7 weeks after your estimated due date? Just wondering if there is a change baby could be born late and only 5 weeks old when you're due to go.

Congratulations by the way!

Oh and I think the passport is doable, you just need to be very organised about registering the birth immediately (choose the name in advance!) and getting passport photos. It took us a while to do those two things, but the actual passport application was fast - we got it within a couple of weeks I think.

You'd need to be very organised. In our busy London borough we couldn't even register the birth until 7 weeks - all the appointments were taken. So there's no way we could have got a passport in time.

I,planned to take my ten-week-old on holiday, but in the event she was only 8weeks as she was a fortnight late...

I got the first registering appointment that I could, and took the brand new birth certificate straight to check and send it at the post office with my prefilled in and countersigned passport application. She was born on 28 April and the renewal date on her passport is 15 May, so it can be done, or at least it could 11 years ago - they may be taking longer /checking more with first passports nowadays.

I took 9 week old DS2 to Barcelona on a working trip... in February! not an issue, enjoy!

Congratulations OP. How old are your other DC?

Opheliasgoldenwine · 14/10/2017 15:26

I’ve done it on my own, it’s hard but doable Smile

DLD1201 · 14/10/2017 15:34

Thanks for your replies.
NameChange30 my 2 others have both been born early - 1st was 5 weeks early and 2nd was 3 weeks so there is always a possibility this one will be completely different and come late 😯.

Randomusernamehere, mine are 6 and 2 years old x

Why don’t you just change the dates ? You can pay an admin fee and do that rather than lose your deposit .

I recently got my toddler a passport - it came back in under a week! (Normal service)
You can pay to fast track it if it's getting tight

DryIce · 14/10/2017 15:39

I just went away with a 6 week old - did the fast track passport application, where you go in for an appointment and they guarantee it within a week.

My appointment was Monday and I had the passport by Wednesday
