Hi all,

I'm thinking about ttc child number 2 but my first trimester with my first child has left me quite traumatised. After he was born I swore I wouldn't have anymore kids but I'm finally at a place mentally where I'm ready for another.

I had horrible nausea starting from about week 6 till week 12. The worst part was that it was constant and unrelenting because I couldn't get relief from throwing up. I had to force myself to throw up maybe a handful of times and would feel better, but it didn't happen easily. So I pretty much struggled through like this all day and night. I know some people have it much worse with hypermesis, but not being able to throw up is really awful too. Anyone had that?

Could you please share what worked best for you to deal with the nausea as well, including any prescribed medication because this time I'm going to ask my GP for help. I've tried the usual: ginger ale, crackers, milk, carbs etc but I want to cover all my bases so I can be more prepared this time!

I meant to say.. I'm interested in getting the sea bands so if any one had them please let me know are they worth it. Xx

Ondansetron worked for me (also constant nausea but rare vomiting). Some people say it's not safe to take in pregnancy, I looked up the studies and wasn't worried so do your own research.

I've been hospitalised and medicated for HG with four pregnancies but currently in my 5th where I've only been sick a handful of times, nausea has been really minimal and I've avoided all medication.

I prepared traditionally by having small amounts of liver regularly and began acupuncture when I got a +ve test. I went back whenever I felt symptoms getting unmanageable. I also really recommend digestive enzymes (with ox bile) as they're usually low due to the body using the components to make pregnancy hormones.

NerNerNerNerNerNerNerNerBATMAN · 14/10/2017 08:26

Hmm at ox bile...

I'm the same OP, from the moment I wake. I find sleeping helps as does plenty of medication. I'm on cyclazine, prochloperazine, and metchlopromide. They take the edge off but I'm still constantly nauseous and will vomit around 3/4 times a day. I have HG though. I've had weeks off work 😔

The only thing that helps on top of meds and rest is eating. Even with the vomiting I've put on weight. Dry biscuits, oat cakes, ritz crackers, melon. Agree that little and often helps. I really hope this pregnancy ends well because I can't face doing it again if it doesn't. I was bad first time round but second is worse for me personally.

@NerNerNerNerNerNerNerNerBATMAN

I totally feel you! I put on more weight in my first trimester than the other 2 only because I was constantly nauseous and eating horrible unhealthy carbs like croissants, chips etc and nothing was coming up so I put on weight. It was a truly awful time and I don't want to go through that again :(

Thanks to all your lovely tips, I'm taking notes...started ttc so lets see what happens Hmm

Cold milk with cereal. I found whetabix helped. Ice lollies yogurt lollies. My sickness occurred throughout my pregnancy and I vomited giving birth when induced. Never eat anything you don't feel like it makes it worse and hot food can aggravate the sickness in your tummy.

bulldogmum · 14/10/2017 21:46

I feel your pain, I had awful nausea for the full 9 months of my first pregnancy. Nothing helped. Also didn’t want to go through it again.
I’m 24 weeks in to second pregnancy and ha d been equally nauseous this time. The doctors prescribed metaclopramide and it has been amazing. There are other meds too so I highly recommend seeing a doctor and talking through options. I’m still taking meds now as sickness is still there but these help me get through each day. Good luck.xxx

Haciendak · 15/10/2017 13:04

Exactly the same as you. Have put off having a second child through fear of the first trimester! I also am.not physically sick but find myself wrenching over the toilet up to 10 times a day.
I am currently 7 weeks pregnant with DC2 and I'm suffering even more than I did with DC1. It's horrible. I've now been signed off work and am spending many days in bed or curled up on the sofa. Sleep is my friend... mainly as an escape as many mention here. I'm also eating lots of cars when I can and trying to not let myself go hungry. All in all, it's miserable, but I'm trying to get by day to day. I'm also wearing the sea-bands which haven't done a lot to be honest, other than itchy wrists.
I think they key for me has been to accept this is how it's going to be for a while, rest and put no pressure on myself at all. DH is now doing all of our cooking and cleaning.

SilverAndCold · 15/10/2017 13:10

Full sugar lemonade like R Whites or Schweppes really helped me. Especially very cold or with ice.

And salt and vinegar crisps like others have said.

Green apples also seemed to help cut through it a bit too for some reason.

I had HG up to delivery day, was dry heaving when nil by mouth because of scheduled section. Here’s all my tips:

Eat things that taste neutral when you throw up, packet noodles are best, curry is pretty bad, hard cheese is worst, it gets stuck in your nose and is like throwing up wax.

Eat protein last thing at night, nausea is usually about the best it is all day then, so this may be possible with HG.

Ice pops. Ice pops ice pops ice pops. Yes I have thrown up a lot of them, but when I was dehydrated they saved my life. They give you necessary fluid but also the cold numbs your stomach so you can get them down when you’re pulling, even if you’re puking every five mins.

Pregnancy 2 I took some tablets, forget the name, an old fashioned antihistamine but wish I hadn’t because it has been linked with smaller babies and I had an iugr baby. They stopped me puking most of the time but I felt the nausea at the same level. But puking is very hard work when you have a 2 year old already so I needed somethinf, I think. I think no one offers those tablets any more btw.

Is anyone else bringing up their entire stomach content when trying to brush their teeth? I have had nausea all day for the past 3 weeks with no sickness. From last week, every time I've began to brush my teeth I instantly throw up. I can't lie, my stomach feels so much better once I've thrown up but it's just not ideal.

KarateKitten · 19/10/2017 20:00

Don't worry Mayah, whatever you have to do you have to do. Just make sure you replace fluids.

ANIDOO · 21/10/2017 02:39

Mayah- when I was pregnant, I retched every time my toothbrush was in my mouth, and would dry heave like a cat with a fur ball for half an hour afterwards! GrinConfused

Mayah · 23/10/2017 17:06

@ANIDOO that's exactly what happened to me every morning. I would just be dry heaving because my stomach was empty, sometimes bringing up a yellow liquid I assume is stomach acid. It's not happened for the past 2 days now so hopefully that's the end of it Grin

Ekphrasis · 23/10/2017 18:08

Oh thank god ive found my people! It’s nausea not sickness but not getting any predictable relief. Last week a croissant cured it; this week causes it.

No food is now helping but my body mind just shovels in junk food in the hood it does. Each day seems different! Will try lollies and avoiding fat as I do think there may be a connection with the fat thing. 10 weeks, had a brief interlude on Sunday morning but the fish and chips I had in the afternoon (which I was craving) appears to have brought it all back today.

Ekphrasis · 23/10/2017 18:09

I just had aversions/ cravings with ds, very clear and consistent. Only the odd day of nausea.

Hairgician · 23/10/2017 18:10

Yea another one here dry heaving after teeth brushing! Everytime.

MummyToASassy4yrOld · 25/10/2017 07:00

I'm with you ladies, brushing your teeth is the worse!!! I absolutely dread it!!

I'm 11 weeks tomorrow and still feeling sick. Lots of dry heaving of a morning and nausea especially early hours, morning and night. It's an absolutely draining . So can't imagine what it's like when your throwing up all day.

This is my second pregnancy and feel so much worse this time around.
I started taking pregnancy vitamins around week 8 got them from boots. They have the usual folic acid, vitamin D but also have ginger and iron. They are rather large so I have to cut them on half to take them of a morning. I'm not sure if I've convinced myself but I feel they help throughout the day with the sickness.

Good Luck Ladies! Let's hope by the second trimester this nausea goes away!! xxx

ethelfleda · 25/10/2017 08:30

I stopped taking pregnancy vitamins and just took folic acid and vit d on their own. Worked wonders for me. I think it was the iron in them or something.
Then started taking iron again in 2nd trimester and it didn't affect me.

HarryHarry · 25/10/2017 14:05

Wear acupressure bands. Don't let your stomach get empty. Keep a snack like crackers or nuts by your bed to eat if you wake up in the night. Make a note of which foods or drinks make your sickness worse and avoid them.

lotty96 · 25/10/2017 16:25

Acupuncture worked for me, she gave me tiny little needles that sat on the inside of my wrist 24/7 - was the only thing that eased it.
Also, brushing teeth with toddler toothpaste was so helpful. Good luck!

MummyToASassy4yrOld · 25/10/2017 21:37

@HarryHarry totally agree with you about its worse when your stomach is empty!! 😭

Dry heaving is not the nicest of the things!! I feel so sorry for my poor 4 year old daughter having to witness it. Sometimes it just comes on you and you can't hide away. I'm surprised my work colleagues haven't got in to it. Roll on 2 more weeks then everyone will know. It's been the longest 11 weeks of my life!!

Yer I agree with everyone I try eating little and often as it does help. xx

Lozmatoz · 25/10/2017 21:56

Vitamin b6, travel sickness bands. NEVER get hungry

MummyToASassy4yrOld · 26/10/2017 20:07

@Lozmatoz are those travel bands any good been tempted to buy them but wasn't sure if they were a waste of money? x

Lozmatoz · 26/10/2017 20:34
