Hi - I've just found out I'm about 6 weeks pregnant and in an ideal world I'd have lost some of this excess weight before conceiving. It happened more quickly than I expected and I think I needed the kick up the bum to get really serious about my diet. To put it in context I'm more than a couple of stones overweight so I'm not just being fussy.
I've read of people losing/not gaining weight during pregnancy to maximise health for themselves and their baby - I'd like to know if anyone else has done this or is in the position of wanting to do this? Or has links to resources on what the best approach is to be as healthy as possible? Or just to have a chat about how it's going for them?
Thanks!

Lamp thank you :) take it easy there, early pregnancy sucks!!! It was definitely the nausea that stopped me gaining weight in the first trimester. I cried so often over food and how I just couldn't face it!

Thanks Darren :) TBH I had no goal in mind at all. Consultant and midwife never said anything about an aim either. I was fully expecting to gain like I did with the other two but I think the nausea (lasted 16+ weeks for me this time and far worse than with my other two babies) and the fact I had already started making very small changes like cutting down fizzy drinks helped me lose a little, then obviously now having to low carb is making a bigger difference again.

At 9 weeks I was 18st 3, now at 35 weeks I am 17st 8

Congrats cagliostro that's fantastic!

I'm 14 weeks and turning the corner away from the nausea (only thing that would help was to eat so I've been stuffing myself).

I joined the gym this week and went yesterday - did 30mins of cardio (running and cross trainer) and about 10mins of weights and already feel loads better! Trying to eat healthily too.

Very well done to you @cagliostro Star! That's amazing. I'm sure it will do wonders for you for the birth and afterwards too.

Hope I can control myself this pregnancy. I gained too much last time and still hadn't shifted it by the time I fell pregnant with this one.

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 12/10/2017 12:50

So I finally worked up the nerve and got on the scales. It's definitely not as bad as I thought, (or else the past few days of lower carb has made a startling difference already)! I've only gained about 2.5-3 kilos since my booking in weight, so that's not so bad.

I think I had already gained a bit before I was booked in though, so I'm sure I've gained a bit more overall.

How is everyone else doing? I've been really trying to keep an eye on things. Hopefully avoiding another shoulder dystocia is one hell of a motivator!

I also have my first consultant appointment today where I want to ask about possible HB or MLU. Will see if she thinks me not gaining too much weight will make that a little more likely.

Cagliostro · 12/10/2017 15:30

Well done for stepping on those scales!

I have my last scan on Monday. Really have no idea what they'll say. Then seeing consultant straight after to review the scan and my sugars (which are fine but I'm so paranoid I'm getting it wrong, missing highs etc)

ChocolatePancake · 12/10/2017 16:38

I'll be joining this club when I get back home! I'm currently on an all inclusive holiday, so I've gone a little crazy... although have no real appetite right now. I'm about 250lbs (maybe more now, maybe less, unsure but my stomach has definitely podged out more). I'm really worried about the effect it will have on my ability to give birth naturally. With both of my previous births I've been perfectly fine and absolutely massive at the end of pregnancy (both big babies though) but now I'm big right at the beginning and it's very concerning

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 12/10/2017 16:43

Thanks cagliostro!

I spoke to consultant and they said I have to have a GTT test for diabetes at next MW appointment and then think they're going to keep an eye on the size of the baby with a view to probably booking a CS when I'm closer to my due date. They said it's too early yet to say if that will be necessary or not though.

No HB for me Sad. I'm fine with it though. Don't want to take any risks tbh. I just wanted to ask in case they said, "great, go for it"!

I'm going to stick with the diet, exercise and hypnobirthing. Hopefully it will pay off, even if it makes CS recovery easier.

Cagliostro · 05/11/2017 14:26

How's everyone doing?
I just thought I'd update.

My last scan at 36 weeks suggested that baby had dropped to 5th centile so they got really panicky and induced me at 37+0. She was finally born 3 days later weighing a reasonably small 6lb 9oz! :)

I weighed myself today and I lost 1.5st with the birth itself. I am now 2st 4lb lighter than I was at booking in appt (and almost 4st lighter than I was at new year) so I'm really pleased!

Although now I am no longer having to follow a GD diet I'm a bit scared I will put it all back on :o

Cagliostro · 05/11/2017 14:28

BTW the birth itself was absolutely fine and I'm recovering well, my weight didn't seem to impact that (but I do think that having improved my fitness over the last nine months helped). Pushing for only 10 minutes. It was only the induction process that was difficult.

I feel like raspberry leaf tea helped too, worth a try anyway IMO :)

Congratulations @Cagliostro!! What lovely news.

Your weight stays are fantastic too - really impressive! Well done.

I’m only 10.5 weeks so a very very long way to go, assuming everything goes ok. So far I’ve managed to keep my weight stable and haven’t put any on, despite eating really badly for the last few weeks. I am eating carbs like there’s no tomorrow, and normally I avoid them because they make me pile weight on. The only saving grace is that I can only manage small portions so it’s little and (very) often.

I am a stone over the weight I’d be comfortable at, and 2 stone over where I should be so I’m very worried about GD. As soon as I stop feeling so nauseous I’m seriously going to have to give my diet a major overhaul.

AyeWhySwim · 05/11/2017 19:25

@Cagliostro massive congratulations on the birth of your DD! That's fantastic news! And well done on your weight/fitness too! I'd love to be in the same position as you in a few months.

I've had a rotten couple of weeks feeling sick, extremely tired then I've had a heavy cold on top of it all. Have been eating pretty badly - lots of carbs and sweet things that I find quell the sickness. On Friday morn I got on the scales and was the same as pre booking appt though. Must try to rein in the eating.

Hi all! 22 weeks and 10lbs on. Now I’m feeling a bit more human I’m aiming to get healthy eating under control. Also got the davina dvd which I’m starting tomorrow!

Is anyone doing slimming world whilst pregnant?

I’m 11.5 weeks and have put on 1.5lbs so far but I am a couple of stone overweight and I am very worried for how I’m going to end up. I’m still feeling pretty ropey and have been eating really badly for the last few weeks, I’ve lost all motivation to cook / prepare food and am eating way too many carbs.

I have some (non-pregnant) friends who are doing slimming world and are getting on so well. I am wondering whether I should go along now and see if I can keep my weight gain under control or whether I should just try and be more careful and go once I’ve had the baby. Would love to hear anyone else’s experience?
