Having an SPD nightmare - can't walk. Any emergency ideas?

Nightmare, nightmare, nightmare. I can today only get round the house on all fours. Given I have 3 kids (staring at me quizically!) this is slightly tricky. The pain is in my groin and inner thigh and I'm sure it is related to the SPD I usu. get - but never this severely. I'm seriously panicking now. And my lower abdomen is really sore - poss. because I'm holding myself so oddly? Anyone got any miracle cures? Please? I've still got another 12 wks of this pg. to go.

If it's that bad you need crutches. Calla GP out or if you really can't move get an ambulance...Hope you feel better.

LittleEasterLapin · 09/04/2007 15:57

No ideas, I'm afraid, but OUCH I hope you feel better soon!

Taylormamaloveslindtbunnies · 09/04/2007 15:59

you need to get an emergency referal from your GP to a physio for crutches, a belt etc etc. If it is that bad today, you need to call your GP's out of hours services and see what they say. If you can, have a warm bath to relax your muscles and try to lie on your side rather than flat on your back. Have you got any help in the house????

Thanks guys. yes, DH is at home but in serious academic crisis - finishing off MSc alongside full time job, so v.v. stressed. He's just taken the kids out. Problem is I can see how desperate he is to get his work done and feel bad for him and I know he feels bad for me. I don't think he understands just how limited I am today (and how painful this is). I feel like he must me thinking I'm being a bit of a drama queen, yelping when I try to walk and resorting to getting round the kitchen on my hands and knees! Usu. when it's bad I can get by. But a couple of wks. ago I had a similar day to today when I couldn't walk and it's really shocked me. Hopefuly it'll be better tom. and settle down. I just can't understand how one day can be so awful adn the next not so bad.

Get the GP out & get referred to a physio. Also make sure you get some crtuches. It may well also be worth contacting the redcross to see what aids they have to help over the next 12 wks. I hired a wheelchair form them & it gave me freedom to go out.
Do you have help in the day with your 3?
I would also highly recommend a mctimoney chirporactor, who will be able to treat you through the pregnancy, this is a very gentle method & I can highly recomend one in hampshire & one in west sussex.
I have been there & know how awful it is. All the gps told me last time was that there was nothing that can be done but thats not what the chiros say.
Do you have painkillers from the GP? If he talks about changing them, double check they are not going to put you on ones containing morphine as this will mean baby going to special care to be monitored when delivered- sounds like I am scare mungering but it has happened in my area & nearly to me.
Good luck

Any chance you get yourself to an osteopath? Pay privately if you have to. I had SPD and made it worse by slipping on a leaf, ouch, and my lovely osteopath got me walking again in one session. I'd recommend osteo rather than chiropractor as they look at the soft tissues as well. Great preparation for the birth too.

Just saw message about McTimoney chrio before - have never seen one but heard they are good. There is one near me, I'm in Gloucestershire though. Poor you, it really sucks doesn't it?

cupcakesgalore · 10/04/2007 10:37

Thanks for the advice. Today I woke up and thought it was much better - till i walked downstairs. Today I can walk albeit v. slowly, but I feel like it is about to get as bad as y'day any minute or if i move suddenly or awkwardly (pretty much if I move at all)! DH back at work so am being a rubbish mum and resorting to TV for the kids. Will attempt something more useful later. Doesn't help that DDs have chicken pox..!

get a wide piece of material. like a sarong, and tie it tightly under your bump and around your hips to try and hold things together a bit !

cupcakesgalore · 10/04/2007 10:43

Just collecting myself together to get upstairs and do that Lulu! Also rang my GP to see if i can get some crutches - obv. not an easy thing from the response i got and also rang the osteopath. Every time it really flares up i also seem to get a gbad re-emergence of morning sickness. Do you think this could be due to a hormone surge or growth spurt?

OP posts:
pirategirl · 10/04/2007 10:47

yes def the hormones, i had it too, still have pain 6 yrs on.

I totally send you big hugs, i know what it is like.

Sounds like a chiro or osteo job to me. I couldnt find anyone who would touch me, sounds like things have thankfully moved on.

hope you get some sort of relief soon,x

lulumama · 10/04/2007 10:52

hormone thing could be it...it is all the hormones that relax the pelvis and all the ligaments to make birth easier

relaxin and progesterone i think , so that is maybe why you feel more sick

poor poor you , how miserable

thehairybabysmum · 10/04/2007 11:00

I had accupuncture for SPD..was v. sceptical but desperate and it gave immediate relief, this did wear off gradually but i cannot recommend enough.

I am in York if you are near, i can recommend someone.

Also second the advice to get referred to womens physio at the hospital, mine was really helpful, my mw referred ne IIRC.

Hope you feel better today

weewilliewinkie · 10/04/2007 12:03

I'll second the acupuncture - it worked a miracle for me too. You do have to have it regularly though, it does wear off. But I felt the effects the very next day, and I ahd been like you, crawling about everywhere (in tears!).

My full sympathy to you, SPD is a freakin' nightmare, and there's just nowhere near enough done to help women affected.

Hope you feel better soon.

I'll third the acupunture & second the women's physio at the hospital, between the two of them they managed to reduce my pain (acupunture) & keep me just about mobile (physio)

hope you find something that works, SPD sucks
